As I was quite confused (and afterwards a littile annoyed with Activision) I thought by myself. Lets make a nice oversight of all the new and the old. If it's not correct let me know!

Skylanders --> Series 2 New normal Giants Old LC New LC
Remod.

Series 1, Wow Pow No , LC Blast No , Soul Gem Yes (open from start), Switching paths No

Series 2 remodeled, Wow Pow Yes, LC Blast No, Soul Gem Yes (open from start), Switching paths Yes

Series 2 new, Wow Pow No , LC Blast No , Soul Gem Yes (find in game), Switching paths No

Giants, Wow Pow No , LC Blast No , Soul Gem Yes (find in game), Switching paths No

Remodeled LC, Wow Pow No , LC Blast Yes, Soul Gem Yes (open from start), Switching paths No

New LC, Wow Pow No , LC Blast Yes, Soul Gem Yes (find in game), Switching paths No

Updated it for a better lay out.

in order to have the highest stats posible for the series 2 figs should i do all the heroic challenges in the first game? i havnt started playing giants yet but if its needed i would perfer to go and level and heroic up all my series 2 figs in the first game before i even start playing the new game just to get it out of the way

Pretty much sums up why Series 2 are the most valuable ones now. P.S. You kinda labeled it wrong btw. The new skylanders are not called Series 2 just new figures or characters from Giants. Series 2 is ones from the first game that don't light up. I know that is kinda confusing the way I worded it but yeah.
