It was first mentioned when the Giants domain name was first revealed:

Apparently this has been around for a long time.
However, I think this is useless information.
I don't know why anyone would be looking around frantically for a new title like the rumors over the Giants logo Twitter post- they will announce games every February at the Toy Fair- and they said they have at least a few more games getting produced so worrying about the franchise ending isn't an excuse either, not yet.

I believe that activision was going to do some promotion for the superbowl, cancelled it, and liked the idea for Skylanders Giants.

Guys, TFB probably thought of Skylanders Patriots during the Syperbowl.
The Patriots against the Giants for who would be the actual title... The Giants won, hence this game is called skylanders giants.

To add to my logic, I had found out about a sequel to Skylanders after finding out the Giants had won the Super Bowl! Weird, isn't it?

It was just a myth, people..

They thought "Giant" meant the football team. It was thought to be a Skylanders Football Game.

It was a joke. This whole domain was a joke. It's just a domain, it costs literally nothing.

It would have always been Giants - they were showing it the day after the super bowl, I don't think they had 2 demo's prepared based on who won. The domain was probably a joke to see if people would think the domains Giants and Patriots were games or just a joke - unfortunatly, everyone noticed Giants before Patriots so their joke was ruined.

Of course they noticed the Giants domain first, MarkMonitor registered Giants 5 days prior to the Patriots domain.

It wasn't registered by 'a random dude' at all. The registrar is MarkMonitor, the same brand protection agency that have registered not only skylandersgiants.com and skylanderspatriots.com, but also skylanders.com. Activision have continually used this company to secure domain names for their projects, in fact the acquisition of BlackOps2.com by MarkMonitor was the key fact in CoD fans knowing the title of this years installment of the series prior to any official announcement.

Skylandersgiants.com & skylanderspatriots.com are both administrated by Matt Serlin of DNSTination (MarkMonitors privacy service), whereas skylanders.com is administrated by Mary Tuck of Activision Publishing. Safe to say for now that as the giants domain appears to contain a redirect, and the patriots domain is empty, that it was likely a decoy and never an intended project.
