I thought they did in the original, someone said they followed you around the Sanctuary. Then again even though I got my set I still haven't tried it out.

They did follow you in the sanctuary. Just not the levels.

For them to work, do you have to leave them on the portal with the 3DS pointing at it the entire time? I've never used a magic item in either 3DS game.
