OK, so now that some of you have these things, what do the cannon, or the golden cannon DO in game?

Follow you around and shoot cannonballs. Light up and entertain babies... New Battle Arenas for both Gold and Silver. That's the extent of it I think, but since it's packaged with Shroomboom and Chop Chop, I'd still consider it worthwhile. Especially since neither is available otherwise.

so do the gold and silver ones unlock different arenas, or the same ones? i can justify buying a gold and silver one if they unlock different things but if the only difference is the color in the game then i will stick with the gold one

Gold gave me one new arena even after silver was registered. I imagine each cannon gives two, one of which is shared, and then the one unique arena.

dang, maybe i'll just wait till a silver one shows up on ebay. which in your opinion is better?

What does the Silver Cannon open?

Agreed. I only ordered the Golden Cannon. Does the silver one really unlock something different??

ok so i read that the golden cannon opens up one extra arena than the silver one, but that extra arena is a reskin of one already available. i hope this helps, correct me if i am wrong

Good enough. From rereading, my understanding is the Gold Cannon unlocks 3, the silver 2.

yep but that extra one is just a re-skin of another arena, kinda like the volcanic vault was in the 1st game

Also I'm not sure if the silver one does this but the gold cannon in the 3DS version is a fire-able weapon by pressing R and facing the direction you want to fire, how ever it costs 30 coins.
