No, I don't know what got him, maybe the evil in that place tempted him SO much that he acctually wanted to be in there and now that there is a purple dragon that could become more powerful than him is here he want to get out.

I think he just got over himself with his own powers. Seeing he was the first purple dragon and had remarkable abilities, he felt like a god or something. That's what I think.
As for how he got trapped in the mountain...I have no idea.
