As Kappa said, you could use my method. This ensures your figures don't get scratched paint. I've seen what that looks like. At one of my local Gamestops, there is a used Trigger Happy with solid yellow eyes. Somehow, his pupils had been scratched off.
Or, you can just throw them in a small shoebox, if you don't care what happens to them.
There are two styles of Stanley cases to use for Skylanders. One is great for carrying around out of house, while the other is best used at home.
Here is the best cases for traveling. I made some adjustments to the placement of characters, so they don't bend.
TOP CASE -
NOTE: On this top case, Boomer is now where Voodood is in this pic. Voodood is in Boomer's spot. Dark Spyro's spot is now where I put Zook, so his rocket doesn't bend.

Now, the best at home case, is the Stanley Sortmaster XL. It allows for you to place all of your elements together. Here is how I decked out my neighbors. I have one myself, but I am saving it for Giants. I will show you why when Giants releases -
I mean, it's ultimately up to you. I'd rather my 10 dollar per figure investment, not to get damaged in anyway. These also help keep them dust-free.
