I assume at this point we really don't know how much of what you do in the original game is going to "carry over" to Giants (or even if they'll let you use the original figures at all), right?

That's a slippery slope for them to walk, no matter how they do it.

If the old figures can't be used (or only offer one-time "bonuses" to abilities but you need to re-buy the Skylanders you already have in their new poses to play), they'd get an unbelievable amount of backlash from that.

Likewise, if you can use your old Skylanders but they get hit by the "Level 1 Gun" so you can't bring over your stat boosts earned from Heroic Challenges in the first game, people who spent all their time 'grinding' are going to wonder why they bothered.

But at the same time, if you CAN bring over enhanced Skylanders from the first game, you'll be able to walk through the majority of Giants without any difficulty, won't feel any need to do the new Heroic Challenges, and veterans of the series will end up spending a lot less time with the sequel.

Maybe the best solution would be to include a "Master Quest" in Skylanders: Giants? An optional, harder version of the adventure where you'd need a lot of Skylanders with high stats (gained by completing the Heroic Challenges from BOTH games)? And one that also lets you increase your levels and stats beyond the normal maximum while you're playing it?

The old figures can be used. We've known that, for a fact, since the game was announced.

An interview with a developer reported that they had taken that into account. Cryptically implying that the difficulty level of the chapter adjusts to the figure.
