If you put a Giant in the original Skylanders game. Would it recognize it? or recognize it as another code for a regular Skylander?

No, Giants won't work in the original game.

What Aura said, but it would be kinda cool if you could play them in the original game... Besides the fact that they're probably too big for most parts of the levels. Anyway, sadly, no new skylanders will work on the original game. A lot of people think the re-designs of the old characters may work on SSA, but there's no real proof and I think they probably won't.
