I've been researching about 3D printers because I wanted to know what would be the best way to mod my skylanders and introduce other items or characters.

I found this product from a CNN video. For $1300, you can make tons of Skylander props and even build your own figure and diorama from scratch.

Hmmm...Nice. That way you could re-pose skylanders buy using the same base, but creating a re-posed, all-in-one version of the skylander. If you got the hang of it, you could, in theory, make a line of re-posed skylanders for twice the price!

If you can't think of something clever to say, ask someone like me.

The possibilities are endless. The print speed is questionable though. I would get one to make figures of the monsters, diorama scene props, and Kaos.

get a makerbot low-end kit. the print resolution is a little on the low side, but if you have the patience to model and then paint the thing, you're golden.
i think the kits are like $800, not bad for an additive 3d printer.

you could also take the rfid chip out of another figure and stick it in your custom figure.
heck, if you had the time and know-how, even make an articulated figure the size of a Giant that's removable from its base.

I looked into that too but I was a little scared about the how the makerbot printer looked like some old school manufacturing machine and it is huge. The one from cubify looks more like a real mass production model and has a smaller footprint. My worry is how quickly can these things fail. Since moving pieces are involved, I did not want to end up with a large paper weight because they break down so easily.

Now all I need is to present my wife with valid reason to purchase one....."Honey I could make you your own custom iPhone case".

makerbots are easy to assemble, and pretty reliable.
keep in mind the only real moving parts are a few stepper motors (Which never ever ever die), and some rails for the two dimensional work table (which don't really have the capacity to fail).
i mean sure the Cube looks pretty, but the components are almost identical to a makerbot, they're just hidden by a pretty looking shell

Oh yeah I've seen things like these before. Honestly, I was thinking about just modding an extra Voodood figure I had for fun.

those use a scintillation 3d printing process, notice how they look kind of grainy?
the makerbot and cube are additive 3d printers, their produced models looks more "stringy"

the difference is that scintillation 3d printers are like, ten grand a pop, on the LOW end.

Just a suggestion for whoever finally decides to make a Kaos figure, make the base of the figure a red portal! smilie
