Not really a topic...but has anyone considered making a chess set out of their Skylanders?
And if you were to make a chess set...
Who would be what in the order of things?
ie. Pawns would be Trigger Happy
What's your thoughts? Would be a cool little project for someone to undertake...and could get kids into playing chess.

My lil cousins play "Sky Chess", among a few other board games. It isn't played much like chess at all, though. It's basically about getting points by scoring as many matches as you can by matching skylanders that have similar elements, colors, body-shapes, etc.
Anyhow, it is an interesting idea. I would never want to buy that many skylanders, or even take up the effort of meeting up with people who do have the amount of figures. But it'd be pretty cool to see.

I'm just trying to think of things to do with our skylanders once the sparkly shine wears off... I think this would be a great function...and Tash...I like that setup...custom painted would be awesome.

Wrecking Ball might make a good Pawn due to his shape and size. I see Eruptor, Lightening Rod, Stump Smash, Prism Break and Drill Sergeant as Rooks. Gill Grunt, Warnado and Zook could also make good Pawns. I like the idea of Double Trouble and Ghost Roaster as Bishops but Voodood could also fit as one. Chop Chop, Ignitor or Wham-Shell are the only characters that look like knights to me. I like Tashiji's choices for the Kings and Queens but I can see Cynder as a Queen too.

Sounds like an expensive way to play a cheap game to me, I'm afraid to say.

This is for after this generation is obsolete. Was more thinking of a way to display them. I own 4 chess sets, including a few that look pretty cool. I also operate a CNC machine that allows me to cut anything I want. So I plan to construct a carry case/display case. But an alternate use for my skylanders would be nice. Was just a random thought. There will come a time when we will be able to buy up skylanders dirt cheap and create an army with them. But I could be wrong.

Well, that could be said for any number of actual, dedicated, manufactured-to-be chess sets, too. I've seen standard boards go for far more than it'd cost to cover one in Skylanders, and the pieces on those boards don't double as anything. In the grand scheme of chess, with how many legitimately expensive boards there really are, I'd say it's almost a moderately-priced way to play a cheap game. |

Not even taking into account you would either need Leg Trigger Happies or to buy 8 starter packs, you need to spend $128 just for pawns (based on $8 a fig).
You can get some fantastic sets for way less than that. Sure, you can also get some great looking sets for way more than that but they are generally display sets and not for real use - the pieces are too heavy. Long after the novelty factor has worn off (let alone always having to remind yourself what each fig represents in the game), you could have spent a lot less and enjoyed a dedicated set a lot more in my not-so humble opinion. Heck, if you want a novelty set, you can get any manner of licensed sets where the pieces at least represent their rank appropriately - Harry Potter, Star Wars, Simpsons, you name it...
