I just saw a commercial for Skylanders on Family channel, and according to it, Spyro is short for the greek word Spyrodon (I think I heard it right), meaning spirit.

Funny, I always thought Spyro was just the word pyro (meaning fire) with an S in front of it.

EDIT: Whoops, how'd that happen? Wrong place!

Wow! I didn't know that! How can Spyro has something to do with spirit, besides it's in his body and that's what keeps him alive.

This was from my 3DS. Now it isn't. I also like the number 10, which is why I put it in my username.

That doesn't mean it's where his name really came from. It came from the fact Spyro already had a name and was in himself his own franchise, so thus it's marketing again.

What you'll probably find is that his name came from a similar thing you thought of.

I'm suprised you don't know this, but:

Spyro's name actually comes from a combination of the word spiro (meaning "to breathe"), and pyro.

So, his name, when literally translated into English, means "to breathe fire". However, the intended, non-literal translation is likely "Firebreather".

This question has been raised tons of times on this forum, and this is the answer that has always beem provided. My source for this information is the Spyro Wiki.

I honestly don't care what the heck his name means. heck for all I care his name could have been super puffy bunny and I still think he's awsome.
(but I don't think super puffy bunny is a verry atractive name for some one trying to make a living.)
but that is interesting how his name could mean so many things.... interesting.

While it is posible Spyrodon is the root, it is far more likely that it is a portmanteu of Spiro and Pyro.
