Chapter 3: First Blood, to Bitter Defeat; Is it Over?
——- “Who are you?” I called to the dark dragon. The dragon smiled evilly. “I suppose you should know the name of your killer. I am Vrathx.” He growled and swaggered up closer. Kiara squeaked. “Kurth!” She backed up. I looked back and smiled reassuringly. “Don’t worry sis, your brother has this.” He looked back, crouching.
“Oh does he now? Ha! How wrong you are…” Vrathx stepped closer still. Baring my fangs I said. “I’ll give you one chance. Leave now, or there might be consequences.” I roared. Vrathx nodded. “Oh, definitely. Like…this?” He shot forward, and I didn’t even see him coming. Vrathx’s claw was suddenly on my chest digging past my scales and into my flesh. He flung Kurth into the cave wall, blood pouring out of his wound. A searing fire penetrated my mind radiating from the wounds. I yelled in pain. “Aagh!” I groaned. Kiara gasped in horror and fright. “Kurth!” She yelled and tried to scamper over to me. Vrathx grinned. “Aww, does little sissy want to save da big brother. I don’t think so.” His voice dripped with poison as he spat a giant glob of red acid. Kiara saw it coming but was locked with fear, closing her eyes. I growled and lunged forward, protecting my sister and pushing her out of the way. A quick shield and the acid splashed onto my light shield. The shield disintegrated, but the acid was gone. I used a technique my dad taught me and covered my body in a special light shield. It plastered itself over the wounds so I wouldn’t bleed anymore. “You DARE try to hurt her!” I roared angrily. My fury rose up, I was bottling the rage inside, I had to bide my time. One quick blow, and it might, just might work. Now that I sensed his power from the claw attack, he was way above my level. But still, maybe I could pull this off. Just maybe.
“Oh yes, I dare. After I kill you, I’ll make sure she dies in the most agonizingly painful way possible.” The black dragon grinned. I rolled in front of Kiara protectively. “Well, I won’t let you!” He roared. “Take this! Hiyah!!!!”
——- I let out my anger, my fury. Normally, I would’ve turned dark, a Dark Kurtharis. But no, I learned to control and channel it into a different source. The opposite side of dark. My rage built up to a climax and I started crying. I wouldn’t let him! I’d never let him in all my 14 dragon years of life. But I can’t win. Well, at least I might buy her time. My scales began to change. They turned pointed as if they were just sharpened immensely. They flashed, the yellow tint in my scales fading. Silver replaced it. Beautiful furious silver. My horns turned the color of gold and grew longer instantly. A new horn emerged with the same color on my forehead, sticking out like a unicorn’s. The wave-like spines on my back were transformed into an awesome turquoise aqua color. My claws were black as obsidian, black as night. I had become the one thing I loved and feared most. A true Crystal Fury. The level only our species could reach so quickly in such a short time. I am Kurtharis, Radiant Crystal Fury. My tears flew upward now by the heated aura. I lunged with my new speed…
——- Starz growled awaking from her black out. She saw the black dragon flying toward the mountain. "Oh no you don't!" She roared. "Not my children!" And sped off, easily catching up with the slow flier and slamming him onto the ground. The other dragon was grayish black with ragged scales and wing membrane, horns curled upward and a sinister aura around him. The dragon said nothing, but retaliated, in a double slashing motion. Starz deftly dodged sliding her claws around and scraping the scales of the dragon. They were pretty tough and didn’t go through. Still, the dragon roared and shot a blast of darkness. Starz shot a beam of light to deflect it, but instead of coming into contact, the dark beam seemed to envelop the light beam and then envelop Starz in a sickly dark membrane. Starz grunted, founding she couldn’t breathe, she couldn’t move! Starz fought desperately for control, her mind running faster. Starz charged up what energy she could and pushed light out of her scales, expelling it in all directions. The membrane was pushed back. Starz grunted, adding more and more power when it popped! Light zapped everywhere around the two combatants making a circle of fire. The dragon hissed in annoyance. Suddenly a large sound was heard. Starz gasped. The aura came from Kurth! He was fighting someone! Oh no! Starz lunged to get in the air but the grey dragon latched onto her and bit down on the base of her left wing. Starz roared in pain and lashed out trying to get him off her. But the dragon had a death grip on her. Starz roared with a mother’s fury, light enhancing her claws and she was tearing the body of that grey dragon to bits but still he held on, weighing her down and rendering her useless to fly as he bit as hard as he could. But the world was dimming for him. He was dying. Starz roared in pain and with a deft blow, beheaded the dragon clean through. Starz panted and then tried to take flight. But with her wing, she couldn’t and the head was still holding on in a death grip. “Oh crap…” She muttered. Starz lumbered as fast as she could through the thick forest.
——- I furiously attacked, shooting blinding beams of energy from my paws, twirling into a double hindleg slash and twisting into a horn ram mid air. But still, Vrathx had the upper hand. The advantage of surprise and quickness was lost. I knew I’d lose now. Vrathx easily diffused the beams and fought equally just as well against me. Ugh, no! He had already won. Vrathx caught through my defenses and slashed through my shields, slamming me back against the wall. I grunted, falling. Vrathx wasn’t finished with me yet though. He slammed an uppercut claw right into the same place before, tossing me up, then appearing as I was going upward and slamming his claws on my bac. I roared in agony. He zoomed down again and hit me with a lashing tail against the wall and at Kiara’s feet. She was stunned, her face pale. My color diminished back to a yellowish tint. The horns had gone back to their normal length and the unicorn horn disappeared. I was reverted back, out of power, and a bloody mess. I felt myself fading conscious. Never before had I been beaten so badly. I had underestimated Vrathx from the beginning, and it proved to be my downfall. But there was no time for regret now. I looked up at Kiara, who looked down upon me her eyes streaming with tears. I blinked. “Kiara, you must run…I’m sorry…I couldn’t protect you.” He said in faint voice. “T–take the last of me. I’ll whisk you far away. Kiara, goodbye.” I whispered, my eyes dimming as well.
