Dragons.

Outside of the Spyro series, how many other videogames have dragons as heroic, and not a monster just to be killed?

None that I recall.

This is a great question.

Despite Spyro, I don't know if there's any other games where you can play as a dragon other than just kill one. Hopefully someone else can answer that for you.

I heard of a game called "Lair" for the PS3 that has a part or two of you controlling a dragon (technically you're riding one, but you can control it).
Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

There is a game called Dragon's Rage. You control a dragon and your goal is to destroy all the orcs, who captured you in the first place. It's very dark and depressing to me, and it's insanely hard (for me). Like Spyro, you have 4 breath attacks: Fire, Air, Earth and Ice. Also like Spyro, there are fodder that restore your health. (But in a much more gruesome way, the dragon chomps down on a sheep or cow and tears it apart with blood everywhere.) Then there are even the enemies similar to the first Spyro game.. The Orcs. They are green monsters that remind me of the Gnorcs from Spyro 1. I don't know, it's not really a GREAT game to me, but it might interest others. Basically it's a dark and gritty version of Spyro.

No the earliest dragons were tales back from the time, it wasn't the focus of the story just a simple beast...a animal, later there were tales of dragons that did crap because they could. Merlin often spoke with a dragon for guidance and problems in the old tales

In Skyrim, there are a few friendly dragons..

Fur Fighters - Tweek is a playable hero.

Dragon Rage, as mentioned.

And whilst you don't really play as them, you do have your own dragon in Pride of the Dragon Peace.

Lair or Drakengard.

There's more dragon games than I thought.

- Most/all games where you raise and fight with monsters (e.g. Pokemon, Dragon Warrior Monsters) have monsters that are based on dragons.

- There's a game series called Breath of Fire where the hero has the ability to transform into different kinds of dragons.

- Combats of Giants: Dragons allow you to create and customize dragons and use them to fight evil dragons.

- Blue dragon is about a hero who uses a shadow of a blue dragon (as the title states) to help him fight.

You normally have to kill the dragon though.
