~Chapter 1: The Legend of Nightmare Moon~
"Over here, my dear, we are almost there."
"Coming ma!" Silvair called out happily, clambering over the rocks to the top of the cliff. The little Silver Dragon was excited beyond belief, he was just about to learn how to fly.
"Here we are." Silvana said softly. She was kindly, and silver, like her son, but she had rosy pink and red markings, instead of his icy blue and cyan. Her eyes were a fiery orange, which her child inherited.
The pair were at the top of a fairly small cliff, overhanging a meadow below. The ground down there would be soft, as it had been raining for days earlier. However, the spring morning was as bright and crisp as the buttercups and daisies pocketed in the grass.
"This is where I learned to fly, when I was your age." Silvana told her son. "As did countless ancestors before me. It was the same for your father." The mother dragon looked around. "Where is he? He should be here by now."
"There he is!" Silvair cried out, staring towards a blinding shape in the sky.
"Hello, my little one!" Gletscher said happily. He was almost identical to his son, though much larger. However, the only difference was the eyes, as he had lime instead of orange. "Sorry I'm late, I was with Zakira, helping her cope, Caroline's death was such a shock to us all."
"Oh yes, the poor thing." Silvana said sadly. "She was only young as well, the same age as you."
"Who's Caroline?" Silvair asked curiously.
"You'll find out when you're older." Silvana said with a touch of finality. The case was obviously closed. "Anyway, you learning to flying is our focus for now."
"Flying is part of our flesh. In our blood. It is what shapes our lives." Gletscher said, walking over to the edge of the cliff. "Believe in yourself, and jump."
"Wait, what?" Silvair cried out, staring at the cliff. "No pointers? Tips?"
"I was given less then that." Gletscher replied, smiling. "I was just shoved off the edge." The little dragon hesitated, then ran at the edge. Silvair leapt, wings outstretched, legs in the air, and he rose, wings co-ordinated. The Silver Dragon laughed with pleasure, he felt freer than he had ever felt in his whole life. In moments he forgot about Caroline, all the doubts in his mind.
"He's a natural..." Silvana gasped, watching her son. "Just like you... He's just like you."
"Silvair has your eyes." Gletscher said simply. "And I think his personality is closer to yours."
---
"Today was the best day ever!" Silvair said, leaping around the cave they lived in, at the top of a mountain.
"Yes, yes." Silvana said, curled in the large nest. "Time for a story, then sleep, alright?"
"Okay ma." the little dragon said, sitting down next to his mother. "What is it tonight? 'The Tale of the Original One'? 'The Voice of Nature'?"
"A new one, I think, since it's a special day." Silvana said gently, dragging an ancient-looking book into sight. She flicked through the pages. "'The Legend of Nightmare Moon.'
"'Millenia ago, the Great One created the world. Among them, two goddesses, twins, who together protected the heavens above. The older sister, Celestial, was the Goddess of Daytime. She brought out the sun to begin a new day. The younger sister, Lunar, the Goddess of the Night, rose the moon and the stars to begin the night. Balance was maintained, and harmony was kept for generations since.
Over time, Lunar began to watch the creatures of the land. She saw them play during the day, but they ignored and slept through her beautiful night. Feeling betrayed, angry, and hurt, she refused to make way for the dawn. As darkness crept into her heart, she wanted everyone to see how wonderful the moon and the stars were, to appreciate her creation. Celestial tried to reason with her, but the darkness in her sister's heart changed her into her corrupted form, Nightmare Moon. She sought eternal night, so everyone could appreciate it's beauty, and force the creatures of the land to admire her, to love her, more then the sister who had taken the spotlight.
Celestial, once more, tried to convince her that there were many who shunned her day, and worshipped the moon. But Nightmare Moon refused to listen. Full of regret, Celestial harness a powerful magic, aided by the magical creatures who wanted nothing more but the balance to come back. The Goddess of the Sun proved victorious, and sealed her still corrupted sister within the moon.
The balance returned, Celestial assumed responsibility for the sun and the moon. For a thousand years, all was well..'"
"What happens next?" Silvair asked.
"'Until the stars aided in Nightmare Moon's escape, so she may reclaim her control of the moon. Full of anger, the younger sister had her revenge, and banished Celestial to the sun. Eternal night was sure to reign.
Celestial's student and her new-found friends tried to relocate the Sun Goddess's magic, which she had kept within an object in an abandoned castle. They harnessed it's power once more, and defeated the corrupted Goddess of the Moon. Celestial returned, and Nightmare Moon reverted back to Lunar. Full of remorse, the younger sister apollogised for everything she had done.
And all was well once more.'" Silvana closed the book. "Well there you are, my dear."
But Silvair had already fallen asleep, pondering about the Goddess of the Moon, and everything else within the story.
