I've been playing the characters on the website and adding them to my Lair, but I have yet to determine the benefit.

I see that you get to play some mediocre games, which has its fun moments, and I like that the developed a social atmosphere for it, etc But I still have not determined if the leveling of my web stats has any benefit to the console version of my game.

Are there reasons to play the online part?

the reason to play any game really. To have fun. When you register owned characters online, you get more and more perks for the minigames in the universe. other than that, its just a formal hands on way to introduce the game to people who have yet to buy it.
