Legend of Spyro: The Rebirth of Time
Prologue: Spyro
I cringed in pain and desperation as Malefor’s claw bore me into the wall as if I was sandpaper on wood. I felt my muscles begin to relax under him, my eyes beginning to roll back into my head.
In an instant, everything that had happened to me since I had first felt dark power pulse through me played back in my head. Cynder tackling me out of the dark beam of purple, me saving myself, Cynder and Sparx from the Well of Souls with a time-crystal, being asleep for what felt like minutes when it was really years.
Then, flashes of my new life since my awakening. Fighting side-by-side with Cynder against our captors, meeting Hunter, discovering Avalar and Warfang, reuniting with the Guardians, only to be torn away from them and Sparx again only moments later.
And then my mind played back some of my latest memories; fighting alongside Cynder in the Burned Lands, traveling with her through the Floating Islands, the long, yet silent, flight to the temple. Me reassuring Cynder, Cynder being frightened by the Dark Master, and then corrupted by him. I hadn’t fought back against her, I couldn’t. I knew that there was more good than evil in her from the moment I saw her true self in Convexity after I saved her. It wasn’t my job to save her this time, a voice in my head had told me. She could save herself, she wasn’t in very deep, she just needed me to believe in her. She had come back to me, her face warm, yet sad at the same time.
My thoughts lingered on Cynder’s face. Her smooth black scales, her shining white horns. Her beautiful, perfect smile.
It felt as though hours had passed, when only seconds had. The vision of Cynder awoke strength within me, my body reconnecting with my mind. I pushed Malefor off of the both of us, let my fury surround me, and (with the helpful combination of Cynder and her fury) tackled Malefor downwards into the volcano.
Malefor plummeted to the purple core of the world, his eyes rolling into the back of his head. Cynder and I watched him, as we used our wings for float gently down after him. Unfortunately, at the last second, Malefor’s eyes snapped open and he gave his wings a quick beat so he was hovering across from us, slightly above the purple rock.
“You cannot defeat me, I am eternal!” he cried in anger, sending a blast of his Purple Fury at Cynder and I.
We easily countered it with our own Dark and Purple Fury attacks, beating our wings constantly to keep ourselves upright.
Powerful waves of energy erupted from the place where the three beams met, shaking my insides. I glanced over at Cynder’s tiny (but graceful) figure and realized that the waves were effecting her more harshly than they were me. Don’t get me wrong, Cynder is strong, but not strong enough to withstand this for much longer.
I felt so much power surge through me, and I realized that I was drawing magical strength from my body, because the feeling in my toes was going numb. I looked again over at Cynder out of the corner of my eyes, knowing I had to let her know how I felt about her.
Some days I wondered if Cynder had ran away from the temple because I was always giving her mixed signals. One day I would be very nice to her, spend the whole day with her, showing her around the temple, teaching her about dragonflies, taking swims with her in the river. Then the next day I would avoid her, worried that if we got to close, the Dark Master would strike. I consulted Ignitus one day, asking him how it felt to be in love, or very close to it. His eyes got a bit misted and far away as he told me of the wonders love, that love was what made the world go around; for if not for love, he and I would not be there.
I concentrated on Cynder’s face, thinking hard, trying to tell her to just hang on telepathically.
I had tried this many times before, it only being successful once with Terrador. He had tried to teach me that some earth dragons were so attuned to nature that they can open up their thoughts to nature, and sometimes, other living beings. Terrador had told me to think about a memory of Sparx and I before I had met Ignitus, and concentrate on it. I had tried several months, with it only being successful once. Terrador had laughed heftily at a glimpse of a memory of me pushing Sparx into the river when he wasn’t looking. His laugh had broken my concentration, and he couldn’t see it anymore.
But now, I felt so much power surging inside of me, I knew that I could at least send Cynder this tiny, reassuring message. I saw her flinch slightly, but then relief washed over her face, and I knew that she had heard my voice.
I had tried so many times since our night in Twilight Falls that I loved her, telepathically. That night, I had finally realized it when I saw how the moons and stars shone brightly off of her scales, lighting up her aqua-emerald eyes, that I loved her more dearly than life itself and I didn’t want to lose her.
Warmth welled up within me, and I could no longer feel any of my limbs. I didn’t care, as long as my wings kept me up. I surged even more power into my attack, and our beams of power began to defeat Malefor’s. The crackling energy reached Malefor and blew him backwards into the shining gem below.
Malefor rolled onto his stomach and jumped back up, glaring at us. He took a few menacing steps forward, but then flinched back in fear as five ghostly dragons emerged from the crystal, surrounding him.

“What is this?!” he cried in fear, shuddering under the stare of the spirits. They hovered for another second, then they bore down on him, swirling in circles around him, sucking him into the crystal along with them. I shivered as the crackling energy around my neck pricked slightly, then exploded into magic dust, which disappeared into the air. The stone began to shimmer a bright purple, the light covering the volcano walls, cracking slightly. I landed on the most solid-looking part of the rock, Cynder not far behind, everything around us shaking. “Spyro I’m sorry, I’m so sorry...” Cynder said sadly as I turned around to face her. She was staring down, regret, sadness, and fear on her face. “Don’t be, it’s over now.” I said gently. I could feel the purple gem breaking apart beneath us, the light coming from it growing brighter. For some strange reason, all of my strength instantly returned and I could feel my power growing, expanding. “So, this is it?” Cynder asked, fear in her voice. Suddenly, the flames, heat, and Cynder’s warmth were very apparent to me. I heard a voice in my head, the one that told me to let Cynder save herself from darkness only moments earlier. I suddenly recognized it. “Spyro, when a dragon dies he does not truly leave this world.” Ignitus’ voice told me. Only now I could hear him outside of my head, his presence all around me. “His spirit lives on, binding itself with nature, offering hope for the future...” My eyes snapped open and I gasped in realization. This was the end, yes. But it didn’t have to be the end of everything. I knew exactly what to do. I could save us, I could save Cynder. “I know what I have to do. Just get out of here Cynder.” I said, trying to get Cynder as far away as possible in case I needed to unleash my dark side. “Spyro, no... you don’t have to do anything. Let’s just go.” “Where, Cynder? There’ll be nothing left! The world is breaking apart.” I said, hope fading from my voice. Then it returned to my voice quickly, hoping I didn’t scare Cynder. “But I think I can stop it...I think I’m meant to.” Cynder ignored the pleading in my eyes, and her own glittered their lovely aqua-emerald as she smiled at me. I looked at her eyes, and suddenly my mind was flooded with flashes of memories when I had seen those glorious eyes. I could feel the warmth of my love for her fill my heart and soul. Every little sound around us, from the crackling of the purple gem, to the fluttering heartbeat of Cynder, was amplified, filling me with power. I suddenly realized that this was how it felt to be completely connected to my surroundings. I was connecting with Cynder, my thoughts filling hers, my love overtaking her mind. “Then I’m with you...” she said, her voice passionate. I took one last look at her, then surrounded myself with all of my power: Fire, Electricity, Ice, Earth, Purple Fury, and my new connection to the endless powers within all of nature together. It lifted me up, slowly, gracefully. My wings outstretched, and the power consumed me. The last thing I remember is a tiny whisper that I heard both from Cynder and within my mind. “I love you...” ~ |

Chapter 1: Ember
(1/2) “Hurry up Flame!” I yelled over my shoulder impatiently. “Do you want to go help the legendary purple dragon like your uncle asked or not?!” Flame groaned as he climbed up a couple more feet behind me. “But Ember, why do we have to climb? Why can’t we just fly?!” “You can fly...if you want to get your wings burnt off!” I huffed as I shot up a couple more ledges on the side of the enormous volcano. I could hear Flame grumble slightly, then all of a sudden, his claws were gripping me under my arms as he lifted me up into the air off of the volcanic rock. I shrieked more in surprise rather than fright. I scowled up at him as he flew sharply to the right of the volcano. “What was that for?!” I screeched as he beat his wings faster, harder. He jerked his head in the direction behind us. I shrieked again. Flame had grabbed me just in time to save me from a giant beast made of rock and lava that was climbing blindly up the side of the volcano. I jumped in fright up onto Flame’s back, grasping my arms tightly around his chest. I could feel muffled laughter in his chest as he repositioned himself and flew away from the monsters front claw as it dug into the side of the volcanic rock. Flame found a ledge large enough to hold a small dragon near by and deposited me onto it, as I am such dragon. He claimed refuge on another ledge a bit higher up. I stared in horror as the monster climbed into the mouth of the volcano, which seemed the perfect size for the lizard-like being to slip into. Once he did so, the volcano erupted with hot air, along with many other crevasses in the sides of the volcano. One struck me in the side, and I cried out in pain as I tumbled over the edge of my safe spot, about to bounce like a ball down the side of the volcano. I cringed, awaiting the sharp rocks to dig into my sides. Instead, I fell directly into the strong arms of Flame. My best friend since my hatching. “Flame! You saved me twice now!” I cried looking up at him in amazement, tears still in my eyes from fright. He smiled at me, and carefully wiped one of my tears away. I buried my face into his strong, golden chest plates; and he tightened his arms around me securely. I couldn’t help but let my mind wander for a moment to the past. Flame and I had been born in an island colony of Fire Dragons who could not only breathe and manipulate fire, but also learned how to manipulate water, electricity, and ice. They couldn’t breathe the three other elements; only manipulate it when it was around. Malefor had learned of this island colony shortly after his Dark Army had destroyed all the most special and sacred eggs in the Dragon Temple, and so sent a small group of his Dark Army to investigate and destroy any eggs found. Since the Fire Colony was used to being attacked (groups of nearby, larger colonies were always trying to take over) they had a good strong army of their own. The General and his army met the Dark Army and told them that if they left now in peace, none of the soldiers would be hurt. The Dark Army acted as if the offer hadn’t been made and ran forward for their attack. The armies fought long and hard, but unfortunately, the Dark Army had another small group approach from the other side of the island, and they snuck into the small city, unnoticed at first because the entire Fire Army was occupied by the distraction. However, some of the younger soldiers-in-training were left in the city, for they lacked the proper training and skill needed to fight. They were left to protect the city from any danger that might sneak past. I remember the fear in the eyes of Flame’s mother as she told Flame and I this story; for what happened next was the worst. Flame’s father had been left behind to guard the city (he lacked only minor training) and saw that the apes had already snuck into half of the homes in the city, and had slaughtered all of the unborn hatchlings. He hurried to Flame’s mom to warn her of the approaching threat, and that she had to take their unhatched, shining, red egg into the Underground City, the last safe place. My mom was at Flame’s home at that time, for our mothers were close friends and neighbors. Luckily, she had brought my egg with her. Not so luckily, she entrusted me to Flames mom while she said she was going to fight off some of the apes alongside Flames father, and to try to find my father (who was out fighting the first batch of the Dark Army). I never did meet my parents. Flame never met his father. My parents and his father had all died under the Dark Army, while Flame’s mom had escaped with our eggs into the Underground City. Flame’s mom told us that my parents were killed by a remarkably powerful hatchling, with scales as dark as a raven flying in the moonless sky, and menacing eyes that gleamed like poisonous emeralds. I see glimpses of her in my nightmares, her as large, evil monster. I don’t much remember the Underground City, nor do I much remember Flame’s mom. She died only a month after telling us what had happened to our families, leaving us with the only family we’d ever known: the few surviving colonists and four of the Ancients, but more about them later. I heard a desperate cry high above me, followed by a menacing growl of evil happiness. I pulled my head out of Flame’s chest and looked up to above the mouth of the volcano. I saw two purple figures, one large and dark, and one smaller and light. |

(2/2)
“That must be them!” I cried, pointing up at the two dragons above the volcano. The sky was so black that they stood out perfectly. Flame followed my gaze and gave his wings a powerful beat. The light purple dragon fell in exhaustion as another blast of hot air sprayed out of the volcano. I screamed as I realized that Flame was headed straight for another hot air blast. Flame gave his wings a quick boost, then barrel-rolled out of the way. He looked triumphantly down at me, but then noticed I was still staring ahead paralyzed with fear. He silently barrel-rolled again and began to zigzag his way up the volcano, around all the hot air geysers. I noticed that the light purple dragon had fallen on top of the floating rock above the mouth, which was now beginning to fall toward the inside. I gasped when the rock disappeared inside and the dark purple dragon followed. Flame’s wings were getting tired, I could tell. I had to take matters into my own claws. I twisted carefully in his arms then slipped down and out so that I fell behind him. He began to slow, but then I wrapped my claws firmly around his ankles and propelled him forward with my own wing-power. For a few seconds, he fought against my force, but then he realized what I was doing. In understanding, he stopped flapping his wings, extended them outwards to the sides, and began to steer. We had done something similar to this when I was teaching him how to fly. Yes, I, a smaller, younger dragon taught Flame how to fly. My wings were naturally smaller than his, but that just meant that I could flap that much harder and faster, for longer. I had told him to take off (he was afraid of flying) and that I would help him once he got in the air. I had wrapped my little claws around his ankles and propelled him forward, and told him to steer with his wings. Then once he got the hang of that, we would switch. Soon, he loved flying! He maneuvered quickly around all the geysers, and we were soon at the top. I released his ankles and looked down into the hot tunnel we were about to enter. I glanced at Flame. He was never uncomfortable with heat; he was a full-bred Fire dragon. Me, however, I wasn’t. I had been told by the Ancients that my mother had been part Wind dragon, part Ice dragon, and part Fire dragon. Most of the Ancients said that my ancestry wouldn’t make any effect on my powers; however, one Ancient said that this is why it was a bit easier for me to manipulate ice than electricity or water, and my Wind ancestry explained why I was a bit smaller than most female dragons. “You can tell which dragon is going to be a Wind dragon from birth. Usually the hatchling is smaller and skinnier than the others, and their wings have a more defined and unique shape for flying. I expect great things from you.” were the last words of the Ancient before he disappeared mysteriously the next day. So far, their have been no signs of my Wind decent, other than my size and the fact that I am good at maneuvering through the air when flying. “Come on,” Flame said, diving down. “There’s something going on down there.” I looked closely through the darkness and dust and saw it too, bright flashes of dark and light purple below. I grabbed Flame’s hand, squeezed it, then pressed my wings up against my sides. This caused us to plummet even faster down into the hole. Soon we saw them below us. The dark purple one had slammed the light purple one and his companion into the wall, scraping them against it. Fire began to engulf Flame and I, as we prepared to help out, but suddenly the light purple dragon sprang away from the wall, and they both glowed purple and body slammed into the dark purple ones chest, and they disappeared again into the darkness. The fire around Flame and I increased, and we used our Comet Dash power to go after them. By the time we reached them, they were battling on a large purple crystal, the light purple and companion versus the dark purple one. The dark purple dragon lost, and was dragged into the crystal by a group of ghosts. Flame and I landed some distance behind the purple dragon and his friend as the crystal began to break underneath. The dark one looked apologetically at the purple dragon, who murmured something comforting in reply. Flame and I decided to go toward the dragons, hopefully get their attention. The dark one looked around sadly and fearfully spoke a question. Suddenly, a ghostly red-orange dragon was behind the light purple one. The voice of this dragon was so familiar, I couldn’t believe it. “...Flame...?” I murmured in amazement. “...Ember...that’s my uncle...” |
