dunno if you're doing this already, but try looking at references while shading, and try to use a light source.
or not, its just something i find helpful that might help you too.

omg that's adorable.

And yeah, I normally do that but this time I tried without a reference to see how well I could do it on my own. It ended up sucking, but oh well... I'm still a student in the arts so you can't expect much from me.

And his face just looks kinda weird there in general... Not happy with how that came out.

Ah okay. Eh, even if it didn't come out well at least you got some practice, and you could use it to pinpoint areas in which you feel weakest in.
I personally blame his eyes. Seems like they take up a good two thirds of his face.

You never get better without practice.

And yeah, eyes are kind of one of my biggest weaknesses... Well, I can get them in good enough shapes, but no matter how hard I try, they end up looking freaking huge. And they end up looking really girly, too.

Like in this drawing I whipped up last night... This is supposed to be a make character but the eyes make him look too girly. And I tried getting the shading in the right direction, but again, I'm still practicing that... I am by no means a professional. :S

And the proportions in general are off... Then again I was being incredibly lazy and didn't use a sketch skeleton. I just kind of mindlessly scribbled.

Oh that. Just wait, sometime in the future you'll have issues with making them too small.

I bet there's some good charts out there that describe ways to make guys look like guys and such.
And there's always Tracy Jb, who draws a variety of characters and makes some really good references.

If I recall correctly, the general anatomy is eyes are in center of head, their distance from each other is equivalent to their size. End of nose half way point between eyes and bottom of head. A shoulder be length of one head away from neck, ect. I forget the rest, sorry. :<

@dc10 - That sounds nice! Ah don't be so hard on yourself. Every picture is an improvement and it'd be great to get a picture from you!
@kitty - Haha, I actually got this question before. Yeah, it's traditonal, and it was actually just done on some plain computer paper. The pencil smudged a lot and I boosted the contrast a bit, so you can't really tell it was computer paper.
