How about a pop-up window that tells you have a new PM? Because the PM link is so small it can go un-read.

well that is a good idea, but imagine if u were trying to do something on this site and windows kept poping up because tons of people keep pm u, it would get annoying very fast, but maybe it would be better if the pm link was a bit bigger or had some image that appears next to it when u have a pm

To prevent that, it could be just one window that pops up and says you have multiple private messages.

Or, alternatively, a small flashing icon next to "PM Inbox".

How about an option to display your avatar in the pm system, but have it smaller smilie or even a separate avatar for the PM system smilie

How about when someone add's you to their friends list, you get a PM or something saying that they have added you... and have a link so you can add them...?

I think the friend's feature is more of a personal option. I would consider it a simple bookmark for users.
