This is a fan fic I wrote about a year ago so I apologize if it isn't great.

Prologue:

After their defeat of Malefor, Spyro and Cynder moved into a cave in the hollow of a mountain. Since moving in, they had decorated and made it more homely and cosy. However, the entrance to the cave was still completely open, so the breeze swept in a lot. But Spyro had the element of fire, so he lit blazing flames that roasted their cave and made it a nice place to live in. Spyro and Cynder’s friends Flame and Ember loved coming to visit. Flame and Ember were cousins and lived quite near. Flame lived in Dragon Village in a spacey cave, and Ember lived in Dragon City, which was quite near to the village. Spyro had been to the village about 7 years ago, when Gnasty Gnorc invaded to Dragon Realms. Ironically, Gnasty Gnorc trapped Flame in the cave which was now his home. That’s where Gnasty Gnorc lived and got his Live Vines to protect.
“We haven’t seen Flame for a while. I hope he’s all right,” Spyro sighed.
“Don’t worry! It’s the Year of the Dragon soon, so he’ll visit for that,” Cynder reassured him. Just 1 ½ more years and then the fairies would deliver the eggs to each and every dragon that lived. Everybody looked forward to the Year of the Dragon, and new dragonflies were born on the day and then matched with a dragon. Spyro could remember the day he and Sparx were matched together and became best friends. That memory would never disappear. Unfortunately, Sparx had to go and live in a distant land, so chances were Spyro would never see him again. There was no better day than Year of the Dragon, but the eggs were a complete surprise. You would never know which colour you would get. Year of the Dragon was kind of like Christmas for human beings; all of the dragons left out a crate near the entrance to their house, and in the night a special, unique egg would be put in it, just for the owners. Then later in the day, the dragon elders would organise a ceremony and give every dragon an egg or two. There were many eggs in a batch, sometimes thousands, and occasionally ten thousands. But one thing was clear, every egg was special. You start getting eggs at the Year of the Dragon when you turn 14, so then you can care for them. Spyro and Cynder were 19 now, because the 2 dragons came a few years after the year of the dragon. Sparx was just a normal dragonfly until he met Spyro.
“I’m going to visit Avalar. I’ll be back in a few days,” Spyro sighed.
“Hey! I want to come!” Cynder said in a hurt voice. Spyro looked surprised.
“Do you really? I thought you said you would never ever, EVER have anything to do with the friends I met before I met you,” Spyro replied.
“Well, if I’ve never met them, I don’t know if I don’t want to have anything to do with them, do I?” Cynder said ignorantly.
“Fine. Come along,” Spyro said. So Spyro put an ultra protective forcefield around the entrance to the cave which completely hid it to anyone but the owners. Soaring through the breezy skies, the fluffy clouds tickled Spyro’s scales as he glided through them. Down below was Avalar, the place where Elora, Hunter and the Professor lived.
“Come on, let’s stop here,” Spyro yelled above the sound of the wind. They swooped down onto the lush, tickly grass and looked around at the stunning view.
“It really is beautiful, Spyro,” Cynder said.
“I know. This is Summer Forest. There’s still Autumn Plains, Winter Tundra, Dragon Shores and all the other worlds to explore,” Spyro replied. Many years ago, probably around six, Spyro came her to stop Ripto, Gulp and Crush from destroying the lands.
“Spyro! Great to see you old friend!” A familiar voice sounded from behind him. It was Hunter the Cheetah, one of Spyro’s best friends. Spyro beamed back.
“You Hunter! Haven’t seen you since last year of the dragon!” Spyro gasped. With all of their conversation, Cynder felt a bit left out. She coughed ever so slightly as if she wanted to be in all this.
“Oh, sorry Cynder! Would you like t-,” Spyro stopped. A pitch black shadow spread itself across Avalar. They all looked up.
“I think you’d best be going now,” Hunter said. “I’ve never known Avalar get darkness this bad, and this early.”
Spyro and Cynder waved goodbye and set off anxiously, wondering what it was. As Hunter said, this was extremely unusual for somewhere like Avalar.

Chapter 1: Devilish glows

Flame was soaring through the deep blue skies to see Spyro and Cynder. Suddenly, a shadowy darkness loomed over him. Afraid, he tried to remember the way to the cave. As he was flying, a pair of devilish red eyes with yellow pupils glared at him. Flame’s eyes went wide and he flew off as fast as he could. He finally made it to the cave and explained to Spyro and Cynder what happened. Spyro looked worried. 3 months ago this very thing had happened at Avalar, but without the eyes. He didn’t know whether to tell Flame at the moment, because it might make him even more scared. Flame looked at them curiously.
“Do you know something I don’t?” He asked suspiciously.
“Well, you know our holiday to Avalar 3 months ago?” Spyro asked. Flame nodded.
“We could only stay there for a bit because the exact same thing happened, but there were no eyes. Not that I noticed anyway,” Spyro answered quickly.
“That’s strange. It’s as I someone’s following us and trying to ruin whatever we do,” Flame replied, quickly understanding everything. Then he looked suspicious.
“Could it have been Cynder?” He asked. Spyro and Cynder both looked blank.
“Look mate, I might have been corrupted and have ridiculous amounts of power put right into my puny little brain, but I don’t have enough of the damn stuff to turn an entire city dark. I can cover up the table or the fire or with the fury the cave, but not this,” Cynder ranted.
“It must have been someone even more powerful than her,” Spyro added anxiously. Flame nodded.
“Maybe even a dragon?” Cynder asked darkly. Spyro nodded this time.
“Probably. But there’s nothing we can do now. Let’s get Flame some supper then we can go to bed.
* * *

The next morning, Flame slept in but woke up when the smell of vulture eggs wafted through the cave.
“Full Draconic breakfast! Vulture eggs, Lamb sausages, toadstools, rashers of chicken and Draconic beans. Would you like fried Artisan bread or toast with that?” Spyro announced cheerfully.
“Hell yeah!” Flame said, immediately scrambling to his feet. Spyro, Flame and Cynder sat at the table and devoured it quickly.
“How’s Ember doing?” Cynder asked with a mouth full of Artisan bread.
“She’s fine. She decided not to come because she heads to the Breakfast Hotel to stay and eat. And she’s scared of Cynder,” Flame replied.
“Why?” Cynder asked. Flame shrugged.
“What’s the Breakfast Hotel like?” Spyro asked.
“It’s a hotel with 12 rooms. 5 are basic, 4 are family and 3 are V.I.P. They do a wide range of foods for breakfast, lunch and tea with snacks and drinks for the rest of the day. There’s even a games field outside. 670 gems for a basic room, 890 for family and, if you’re invited, 2575 gems for V.I.P,” Flame replied, happily munching on his toast.
“Wow. Sounds like quite a nice place,” Spyro nodded in satisfaction, but still taking more notice of his breakfast. Chatting happily, Cynder brought up a subject that they had not talked about for 12 hours.
“Look, we might be trying to forget everything about last night with Flame, but we really need to sort this out. This is serious. It might be fatal to some of us if we don’t sort it,” she said. Spyro had to agree, because that was exactly what he was going to say if he had wanted to say it.
“So, what are we going to do?” He asked after a long silence.
“Well, for starters we can ask anyone else if they’ve seen anything,” Flame suggested.
“Good idea. So let’s go,” Spyro said, and after a last gobble and their breakfast was finished, they set off outside the cave and landed in a small town. It was a happy, jolly place and didn't look like anywhere where there would be darkness. Cynder decided to get straight to the point.
"Have any of you guys experienced strange darkness?" She asked everyone. The only person who replied yes was an old dragon, wise looking with stone grey eyes. He looked blind and his raspy, hoarse voice had a tone of sadness to it.
"There was a time, long ago, a black dragon, she was, and shadows burst through the night," He said. Cynder looked puzzled. It didn't make sense. But being an intelligent dragon, she decided to work out the dragon's reply before it was too late.

Chapter 2: Year of the Dragon

Being caught up in finding the shadows, Spyro forgot it was Year of the Dragon. But Cynder didn't. On the morning, she nudged Spyro sharply and hissed at him. She loved Year of the Dragon, and as a young dragon, she always wondered whether she's receive any eggs. There was to be a ceremony at the Dragon Temple, and all worthy dragons would receive an egg or more.
"Come on Spyro you lazy git! Wake up! Didn't you get it into your puny brain that it was Year of the Dragon today?" She hissed angrily, fuming. Spyro jolted up with a start, his heart pounding. Cynder's eyes had a flash to them that Spyro couldn't bare to meet. He suddenly felt guilty about forgetting. How could he? This was probably the most important day in the dragon world!
"Sorry," he mumbled to Cynder and then he shuffled through their cave to the most ornate corner. Cynder loved decorating their home. There were ornate red and gold blankets with intricate swirls on for beds and they ate in a lovely golden kitchen area. It was a very small cave in the hollow of a mountain, but you couldn't help but love it. Beating wings sounded from outside and suddenly in barged Flame and Ember. Ember had grown a lot since last seeing Spyro. She was an attractive young dragon with a sheen to her pink scales. She still had her lucky heart necklace and she seemed very happy to see Spyro and Cynder.
"Hi! Long time no see! I thought by now you would be ready for the ceremony!" Ember said in her normal girly, high-pitched voice. Cynder replied quickly.
"Well it Spyro had remembered and woken up quickly, maybe we would be," Cynder edgily replied in her deep voice. Flame raised his eyebrows at Spyro and smiled. Spyro shrugged.
"Are we going or not?" Flame asked impatiently. At that the dragons set off to the Dragon Temple.

Upon arriving, the elders greeted the dragons politely and the happy atmosphere rubbed off on Cynder, as it seemed like she had forgotten the events of the morning. She didn't even look uneasy when she saw the old dragon with stone grey eyes, and she bounded up to him and started talking cheerfully.
"Who's that?" Flame hissed. Spyro shrugged. Ember was absorbed into the conversation of a few rich, posh looking dragons, and didn't seem to have a clue what was going on. Suddenly, a booming voice sounded and a dragon elder called Aquane peered out at the crowd.
"As you all know today is a very special day, the Year of the Dragon. Our ceremony will start with the giving of eggs to worthy dragons. That will be followed by the Great Party and Feast. Thankyou dragons," He said, his voice echoing off the stone walls. Cynder looked tense as the first of 200 eggs was lifted up. The egg was a teal colour with ornate, intricate silver swirls. But before they gave that egg out, a deep red egg with gold swirls was brought out too.
"We thought we should give these dragons two eggs as they have displayed great care in everything. Spyro and Cynder, these are for you," Volteer announced. Cynder breathed a sigh of relief and took the eggs tenderly.
"Thankyou ever so much," They both said, bowing. It wans't until the end that a silvery egg was brought up, and Flame and Ember were called to take it. Before announcing that it was their's, low whispering could be heard and their faces were serious. It seemed to be a very special egg.

Chapter 3: The Great Party

The party soon arrived and the dragons were so happy that their worries were forgotten. Dragon after dragon tried limbos, dancing, singing and the feast was devoured in a short time. Suddenly, Spyro heard a crack, and a piercing squeal from Ember. Every dragon turned round and saw that their egg was opening. Usually, eggs took up to 2 weeks to hatch. But this one seemed keen to get out. It started hurriedly opening, but then stopped shortly after. This was curious, they needed to investigate. Spyro crept over and leant his head against the smooth shell of the silvery egg. There was still a heartbeat and the sound of strained breathing.
"We need to get him out now," Spyro suddenly announced. Everybody looked at him in shock. Every dragon knew that you should let a baby dragon hatch on it's own.
"Are you insane?" Cried a disgusted dragon from the crowd. Spyro knew he needed to defend himself.
"It's struggling to breathe and if we don't let it out, it might die," he said firmly. A few dragons came to listen to the sounds coming from inside the fragile metallic shell. They all nodded at Spyro.
"We've got to ease it out gently, too much force and it won't be able to adapt. All we need to do is give it some room to breathe and some air," He ordered. The dragons nodded in agreement and Spyro gently eased open the soft shell of the egg. A small, silver dragon was curled up inside, it's yellow and red eyes boring into the dragons. What had Flame and Ember got given on the most important dragon day ever.....
