They sat side by side in the mouth of a cave staring at the endless fields of green. Their eyes swept over the lush grass and the vibrantly colored flora. And yet neither stole a glance at the other. Their minds raced with thoughts; they tried so desperately to ponder the situation they were in.
Had they journeyed to the other side?
"It couldn't be." She whispered. It all seemed so tangible. She stared at her onyx talons and flexed them. A cool breeze tickled the spaces between her toes. "It's all like some sort of crazy dream." She muttered. Finally the dragoness stole a glance at the purple figure on her right. What's he thinking right now? She wondered in her mind. He seemed lost; a far away look in his eyes. She could have sword his eyes started to gloss over. And then he noticed her; he briefly made eye contact through the corner of his purple eyes and looked away.
She frowned. He was troubled. How she wanted to comfort him. But could she do that? Did he really know how she felt?
"Spyro," She whispered, breaking the tense silence clinging to the air. "Is there something on your mind?"
"It's nothing," He replied bitterly, shrugging off the question with a wave of his paw. Cynder bit her lip and looked away. The purple dragon frowned; he had upset her. "I-I'm sorry. That was rude of me."
"It's okay," She consoled. "I just wanted to know if you were okay." Her voice trailed off. Spyro stared at the floor of the cave and let out a deep, depressing sigh.
"I don't know Cynder." He admitted, a twinge of sadness in his voice. "I just don't know what to think anymore."
"Aren't you happy? Malefor's dead; the fighting is over. We can relax." She exclaimed in an optimistic tone.
"Yeah, but at what cost was this battle won?" Spyro countered.
"Ignitus," Cynder realized his point and looked glumly toward the ground. How could she have forgotten? The old fire guardian meant more to Spyro than anyone. But he was gone now. She could see his eyes watering.
"It wasn't his time." He hiccuped. "I could've saved him. I just know I had the power to get him through." He paused and looked directly at her and she froze up. She had never... never seen him this sad. "How could I have failed him? After all he did for me?" The tears were preparing to flow. Cynder bit her lip and whispered a quick prayer that he would forgive her for what she was going to do...
SMACK!
Spyro sat in stunned silence. His cheek stung and he could see a disgraced look on Cynder's face. "You..." The words got caught up in his throat.
"Spyro, listen to me for a minute." She growled, stomping her foot on the ground in an act of defiance. "Spyro, you're such a unique dragon."
"Please don't bring up the Prophecies again. I can't listen to those anymore." He moaned.
"I'm not talking about the Prophecies!" She nearly roared, causing Spyro to shrink back in fright. "I'm talking about the past!" Spyro looked at Cynder in confusion. "The one thing," She stated, "the one thing Spyro the dragon never thought about was the past. He always lived for the present or focused on how to make the future better for himself and others."
"What's that got to do with Ignitus?" Spyro questioned, leering at Cynder bitterly.
"I know you well enough by now that you are not doing Ignitus's legacy justice by ruminating on his death. You should be looking forward to the future; a future free of fighting." She then looked toward the ground before gazing at him once more; her cheeks and a slightly red tint. "A future that we can make for ourselves."
"Cynder..." Spyro seemed awestruck but the black dragoness put a paw to his lips.
"You saved me in Convexity because you were thinking about the future. Not about my past. You wanted me to have a real future filled with hope." Cynder said. "And I want exactly the same thing for you. You of all the dragons out there deserve to be happy. That's why I said what I said in the center of the earth... right before you repaired it." Spyro stared dumbly.
"I know, Cynder." He said after a tense moment of silence. "I heard you. And I'm so glad you said that because I feel the same way. I don't know what I'd do without you." He leaned in close and pecked her on the cheek. Color rushed to both of their faces. "Thanks for being there for me... mentally and physically."
"Don't mention it." She whispered as she placed a paw against her cheek.
She could not help but curve her lips upward in a slight smile.
