kk heres part 1 of chapter 1
“Lindsey, because of your constant appalling behaviour here at Ember High, and I’m afraid we have decided to exclude you,” Announced the head teacher, Mrs Brooklyn, quietly. I thought about what Declan and Paullina would think if they found out. I’ve been expelled from two schools before in the past. Declan and Paullina weren’t happy at all when they found out. Well, I don’t think Paullina was really bothered, but Declan went ballistic. He was shouting really loud and I swear my ear-drums nearly broke, while Paullina was keeping to herself in her bedroom, probably looking through her Abby Jewellery catalogue. Whatever was going on with me, Paullina never seemed to be bothered about it. I think she regrets adopting me. Once, when I was about ten, I remember eavesdropping an argument between Declan and Paullina, about me, which I didn’t really need to guess, since nearly always their arguments are based around me. It was 11.0.clock, and I was quenching with thirst, so I tiptoed downstairs, so tired I was practically sleepwalking, but paused in the middle of the hallway at the sound of bickering. It was never a good idea to enter a room when Declan and Paullina we’re arguing, so I just stuck around in the hallway, hoping they’d finish arguing soon so I could get a drink.
“Why didn’t we just adopt that sweet little angel Grace instead? We wouldn’t have any of these issues if you hadn’t of insisted we choose Lindsey,” I heard Paullina grumble. She said my name as if I was the devil, and whenever she said Grace I imagined a little angel with feathery wings and a glowing halo. I’m an orphan. I used to live at a Care Home but when I was about seven I met Declan and Paullina and they soon decided to adopt me. Well Declan did, Paullina wanted Grace. Grace was a girl at my Care Home. She was my complete opposite; she was well-behaved, polite, pretty and extremely girly. I hated her and she was my worst enemy... I didn’t like anyone at the Care Home, even the care workers. I had secret nicknames for them all. Goody-goody-two-shoes was Grace’s, and there was Miss Tick, one of the care workers who looks horribly like some sort of toad, and she seemed to act like one as well, hence the nickname Mrs Toad-face. I pressed my ear against the wall so I could hear better.
“I’d much rather choose Lindsey than some boring little ‘angelic’ hatchling. She might not behave well, but at least she has personality…” Declan grumbled back.
“But no matter how hard we try, she still won’t behave! I told you we’d be better adopting a little darling like Grace, but you just didn’t listen!” Paullina retorted. Declan heaved a sigh.
“Maybe you’re right…” He whispered back. “What can we do? They’re must be some way of getting her to behave,”
“We’ve tried everything, honey. The best thing we can do is take her back to the Care Home and adopt another girl,” Paullina said. My heart thumped and thought about going back to the Care Home. I shuddered just thinking of it.
“We can’t go through all those papers again. And we can’t just take her back to the Care Home like that. There’s no point anyway, sweetheart, we’re getting old. It’s too late to adopt another child…”
“I guess you’re right…”
After that there was just silence. I decided I would just get a drink from the bathroom instead, so I went upstairs.
I felt relieved. For a minute I thought I was going to be taken back to the Care Home. I hated it there.
Now four years on I still haven’t learned to behave. I don’t know why I don’t. I guess it’s just part of who I am.
I remembered last time when Declan warned me if I was expelled from my next school I would be in deep, deep, deep trouble. And when Declan meant deep, deep, deep trouble, he really meant it.
“Lindsey, are you okay?” Mrs. Brooklyn asked, concerned. Oh no! Looks like I had been daydreaming. I yawned and nodded.
“It’s not just that, Lindsey, we just thought you we’re having a hard time in School as well. But still, refusing to meet our expectations for behaviour is unacceptable. You have been warned many times before, but now you’ve gone too far, getting into fights with other students like that. Yes, it’s unacceptable for them to pick on you, and you have the right to stand up for yourself, but punching them like that its just going over the top. I’ve spoken to the pupils who we’re picking on you and they said they will never do again. We are expelling you to make you think about you’re disgraceful behaviour and make a fresh new start as a well-behaved student at a new school. We think it’s best for you, do you?”
“Yes Mrs Brooklyn…” I mumbled, not really listened.
“Great,” She said.
