The beautiful golden boat moved at a snail’s pace on the river. I’m glad it did. It’s making its way to hell – or in other words, a wedding with a dreadful monster. In case you think I’m mad, it wasn’t me who planned the wedding. It was my Mother.
“Aren’t you a lucky girl, marrying Phillip at Hermosa Gardens?” Mother said cheerfully whilst fanning herself.
“I don’t want to marry him, Mother,” I said in a firm voice. Mother laughed evilly. “Don’t be silly, darling! Of course you want to marry him, he’s a wonderful man!”
I’m sick of this. How many times must I tell her? I don’t want to marry him!
I’m getting married to Phillip today. I wouldn’t mind it if Phillip wasn’t such a beast. I don’t know what Mother sees in him. To start, he’s horrifying ugly. His scales are a hideous shade of green, but his scales are nothing compared to his nails. No doubt, his nails are his worst feature, after his personality, of course. It looks as if he’s never cut them in his life. Their incredibly long and crooked and they’re this unhealthy yellow colour that could put even the strongest dragon in the world off their dinner. His personality is even uglier. He’s got nothing to be proud of, and yet he’s so big-headed. The only person the world he cares about is himself. He seems to think everyone else is a worthless object. He’s quite wealthy, maybe that’s why Mother wants me to marry him, but I don’t want to marry someone just because of that!
I needed to do something, and fast. The boat was getting closer and closer to Hermosa Gardens, Sometimes I just wish I could fly away, far away from Phillip, Mother and all the others and to a forest, where they could never find me. That’s it! I could fly away. There’s a forest nearby. Mother, Phillip and the others wouldn’t dare go in the forest. I will be able to survive too. There are plenty of things such as berries, apples and pears, and I can always catch a squirrel of something. I know, it’s not the best menu, but I prefer that to living a life with a bunch of snobs, and I’m sure I would survive better living in a forest than living with them.
So, I took off. Mother was too busy fanning herself to notice at first, but she soon noticed.
“Henrietta, come back!” She cried. I ignored her. I didn’t even turn round. I just kept flying, as fast as I could. My heart was pounding against my chest. I was scared, but proud at the same time. Mother called again for me. I ignored her again.
I soon reached the forest, flapping my wings above numerous tall, green trees. I flew down, and my paws soon touched the long, prickly grass of the forest. I looked around, and smiled widely. It was good to smile again. I haven’t smiled in ages.
Freedom, at last! I pranced around madly. I’d never been so happy. I should have done these ages ago! I even started singing! Suddenly, I felt really dizzy, and then everything blacked out…
The next minute I found myself lying on the floor, feeling dizzy, with the blurry outline of another dragon in front of me. I didn’t have I clue what was going on.
“Phew, you’re alive! You okay?” A faint, but deep voice murmured.
“What’s going on?” I stuttered, attempting to get back up on my feet. It didn’t work. I was too weak to even get up.
“Well, I just found you here, lying on the grass. At first I thought you were dead! Oh well, at least you’re still alive. Let me help you up,”
I could see clearer now. It was a young dragon with unmissable, bright orange scales. You could spot those scales ten kilometres away, I said in my head.
He held out his paw, and I grabbed onto it. He was a strong dragon and he didn’t even grunt when he pulled me up, which is shocking, because of how fat I am.
Yeah, I’m fat, and I’m not proud of it. I’m just addicted to sugary food. Hopefully I’ll lose some weight out here in the forest.
The dragon chuckled.
“What are you laughing at?” I snapped. The dragon looked startled. Another thing I wasn’t proud of was my bad temper.
We both apologized at the same time. He chuckled again.
“Come on, I’ll take you to the tribe,” He said. “Follow me,”
I was much better now, although I still felt a bit dizzy. I followed him. I expected it not to take long to get to the ‘the tribe’, but I was wrong. It took a while to get there.

I didn’t even know what a ‘tribe’ was, but I followed him anyway.
“What is ‘the tribe’?” I asked him, as politely as I could. “You’ll see once you get there,” He replied. From then there was no more talking. Just silence. The whole forest was silent, apart from the faint hooting of a tawny owl. Golly! It got dark quickly!, I thought. Finally, the orange dragon stopped at a lush green bush, covered in darkness. With a struggle, he climbed through the bush. I tried to copy him, but ended up half-way stuck in the bush. This was embarrassing, but I’ve had much worse. He eventually pulled me out of the bush, and I fell headfirst on the ground. He pulled me up on my feet again. “You okay?” “Yes I am, thank-you,” I muttered. “Hey, what’s your name?” “Not telling,” I growled. My name is Henrietta – my Mother thought of it. I absolutely hate my name and I would rather remain anonymous. I would just have to think of an excuse. “It’s only your name,” “Yes, but its personal information,” I grumbled. “Hey, if you’d rather be anonymous, that’s fine. My name is Rabbitfoot,” I couldn’t help but giggle. And I thought my name was bad! “I hate my name, so you can just call me Rab,” He said, laughing with me. “I hate my name too! Alright, I’ll tell you my name – but only because you told me your name. It’s Henrietta,” “Hey, that’s not actually that bad. At least you’re not named after a rabbit’s foot! Maybe we could call you Hetty for short. Like it?” “Yeah, it’s great!” “We better get some sleep now. All this walking has made me exhausted. I’ll introduce you to the villagers in the Morning before you I take you home,” “H-h-home?” I spluttered. I’d forgotten completely about home. What to do? If I told him I’d run away he would probably take me back to Mother. How would I say I had no home? I would have to pretend I lived somewhere in the forest. I’m sure they’ll be caves lying around. I’ll pretend I live in one of those. “Hetty, are you alright?” Rab said, concerned. “Yeah, I’m fine,” “Oh, ok. It’s just that you looked a little worried,” I faked a smile to show him I was fine. “Speaking of home, if you don’t mind me asking, whereabouts do you live? “Oh, it’s no problem. I live in a cave nearby,” I said quickly. I hoped he would believe me. ”I don’t recall any caves near here, are you sure?” “Oh, it’s just my bad geography skills. I’m certain it’s somewhere in this forest, though,” “It won’t take long to get there, will it?” “No, shouldn’t take long,” “Let’s get to sleep now. Try not to wake the villagers,” Whispered Rab. “Follow me,” There were small huts scattered around the place. Rab tiptoed to the hut at the very back. I followed him into the entrance, revealing the humble, mucky insides of the hut. There were wooden boxes full up with all sorts of knick-knacks, a shelf holding many tools and first aid equipment, a little table with two little seats to match, a huge pile of wood and a stack of hay in the corner. The thing that caught most of my attention was a large, shimmering object hung up on the wall. I couldn’t help but walk towards it and poke it. “Don’t touch that!” ”Sorry, what is it?” ”My weapon. It was passed on from generation to generation of my family. It’s special – and dangerous. It is only allowed to be used to kill the darkest of evil. Anyway, enough of that crap, let’s get to sleep,” He sauntered towards the pile of hay, picked out a load of hay and dumped it under the shelf. “Good night,” He said, burning out the candle on his table. “Where do I sleep?” ”On the hay…” He said, as if I was an idiot. I settled down. Rab had fallen asleep fast, but the clock ticked away as I tried to get to sleep, but I soon drifted off into sleep… “Morning, villagers!” A voice yelled from the outside along with a bell ringing madly. My eyes immediately opened. With a stretch and a yawn, I got up on my feet. I expected Rab to be awake, but he was still fast asleep. I walked over to him and nudged him. He didn’t move. I tried it again. It didn’t work. “Wake up, Rab!” I shouted at the top of my lungs. He shot up, and looked around, confused. “Wha- what’s going on?” He cried, running his fingers through his messy brown hair. “I think someone wants us to get up!” “Oh no – who is it?” He said, panicking. “I don’t know,” I replied. He rushed to the entrance and peeked outside. “Oh no – it’s Randif! Hide, quickly!” He cried as he gathered the two piles of hay we slept on into one whole pile. “Get in there, he won’t find you in there,” He whispered. “Why?” I whispered back. But it was too late, I heard him grab something and zoom out of the hut. I leaped in the stack of hay, doing my best to cover myself completely. There was a lot of hay, so it could cover my entire body. It was extremely dark inside the huge pile of hay, so I moved a bit of hay away from my eyes so I could see. My heart was thumping. What was going on? The calm and content Rab seemed so worked up, and who is this Randif? Many other questions flickered through my mind, but my main concern was Rab. It felt as if something bad was going to happen to him. |
