“Wake up!” A voice boomed.
My eyes immediately opened, revealing my brawny father in front of me. Everyone in my family was muscular, all expect me. I didn’t understand why I was so skinny and meek-looking, while the rest of my family were so strong- looking.
“Ignitus, what do you think you’re doing?” My dad yelled. I was silent. I didn’t want to talk, and I was too tired to anyway. I closed my eyes. Hopefully he would think I was ill and he wouldn’t send me to the dreadful school day ahead of me. “Stop dawdling and get yourself to school!” He screamed. Unfortunately, my dad wasn’t in the best of moods today. I shuffled out of my comfortable bed, and headed downstairs for breakfast. I was so tired I practically sleepwalked downstairs. Now I could smell my mum’s scrumptious breakfasts on the table, and I could hear one of my brothers, the very fast Burn, munching away at his breakfast. Burn was very energetic and irritating, but at least he wasn’t as irritating as Infernocus. Infernocus is fifteen, one year older than me. He is definition of annoying, snobbish, rude, big-headed, childish and if I put all the lovely words to describe him down it would probably fill this entire book. There are rude words to describe him as well, but I can’t risk my parents finding my diary and seeing a never-ending list of swear words to describe their little sweetie. They would go ballistic.
I have to sit next to little slobbering Ash again. I always do, because I’m always last up. I don’t mind sitting next to him though. He’s my favourite of all my brothers. I have a lot of brothers, five to be exact. I’m not very fond of any of them, but if I had to pick a favourite, it would be Ash. As you probably guessed, my least favourite is Blaze. Coal, who is sixteen also isn’t fond of Blaze, but he’s all grouchy and miserable and that puts me off him. He’s miles better than Blaze anyway.
Today we were having English breakfasts again. My mum is a very good cook, unlike my dad. When we were little she used to bake these huge fancy cakes that I loved, but when dad got into this healthy eating thing, they had a massive row and she never baked a cake again. They haven’t had a row about mum’s cooking since, but dad still nags Mum for what she cooks.
I pressed my teeth into the meaty sausage, while Burn and Blaze were wolfing away at their breakfast.
“Mother, what after school clubs are on today?” Blaze said in that posh voice that I hated. Blaze had a lot of after school clubs. In fact, he had to have a special time table with them all on. I was glad he went to a lot of them, life is great without Blaze around. Mother moved away from the sink, and looked at Blaze’s special time table. “You’ve got tennis club and art club… oh and there’s swimming at 7.o.clock. Better pack your swimming bag,”
“I already have it packed,” He said proudly.
Mum smiled.
“That’s my sweetie!” She chirped, and then went back to the sink to finish washing up.
Burn had disappeared from the table, and you could hear him stampeding upstairs. Blaze soon joined him. It was just Ash, Coal and I now. Even Coal had eaten quicker than me. He was down to his last sausage now, but I could see he was taking his time. It was necessary to take your time before school. Make the most of the time you have before you go to school.
Suddenly, dad barged in the kitchen.
“Ignitus, Coal!” He yelled at the top of his lungs. We stopped eating and gave him eye contact. “Bloody hell! Why are you still eating your breakfast? Its five minutes until the school bell rings! Quickly, get upstairs and get ready for school,”
We both dragged ourselves upstairs, grumbling at the same time. I wish I was a little hatchling like Ash. Then I wouldn’t have to go to school at all, and it would be an easy life without any problems at all.

I was first in the bathroom. I picked up my pink toothbrush, and began to brush my teeth. It’s not fair. I’m always last to choose what colour toothbrush I have, and I always end up with pink. My mum hates the colours pink, and all the good colours are taken because I’m always last. I wouldn’t have this pink toothbrush if I was fast like Burn or Blaze.
When I’d finished, I slowly walked to my room, and searched through the mountains of mess for my Dragon High tie. Finally, I found it. I did the tie, but it was too small, so I did it again. Perfect. Well, not actually, but, you know. I sauntered downstairs, and I saw dad at the end tapping his watching, not looking very pleased. “Ignitus, its five minutes until the bell! Get yourself to school now!” Dad yelled. Blaze had been ready for a while now. He smirked. Dad went to the kitchen to kiss mum goodbye. Suddenly, I fell to the ground. Blaze had kicked me. I heard a smash I looked up, and I saw Blaze particularly laughing his head off. Burn zoomed into the room. “What going on…” Burn stopped and gawped the pieces of vase on the floor. Oh no. I’ve broke mum’s favourite vase. It wasn’t my fault, it’s was Blaze’s. He kicked me. But there was no point in telling him off to my parents when they find out, because they wouldn’t believe their beloved Blaze would do such a thing. I decided to quickly grab my bag and leave the house before my parents found out. I ran and ran until I got to the school gates. No one was there, and the siren was wailing like mad. I rushed to the field and saw everybody lined up. I looked like a right idiot, taking ages to find where my form at lined up. There were so many forms lined up it was if the whole dragon population was on this very field. I know, I empathised it way too much, but you get the point. Finally I found my form, and the members of my form gawped at me as if I was an alien as I joined them. I think I am an alien in disguise as a dragon. I’m very different from the rest. That’s why I have no friends and everyone makes fun of me. I had to go next to Malefor in the line, the most popular student at Dragon High. No one made fun of him. Everyone was friends with him. He was handsome, popular and strong, the complete opposite to me. He had made fun of me before, but he wasn’t as mean to me as the other kids were. He did it in a light-hearted way. I expected a burden of name-calling to come from his mouth, but instead, he just smiled and said hello. |

I didn’t know what to say. I hadn’t really had someone be friendly like that to me in school before. I just smiled back and didn’t say anything. After all, it could be just a trick.
“That fire alarm is very annoying! Do you agree?” He said in his loud, confident voice. Although I still thought it was a trick, I was a tiny bit more convinced it wasn’t a trick this time. “Yeah,” I murmured in my quiet, weak voice. “The noise it makes is so annoying!” Exclaimed Malefor, then impersonating the siren’s wailing noise. I laughed, and Malefor smiled at me. “I hate having to line up here. It takes me forever to find our form, and it also takes our form tutor forever to do the register!” I suddenly came out of my shell. I was beginning to like Malefor. He wasn’t as mean as I thought he was. “Me too! I wouldn’t mind it if it went off in a P.E lesson. I’d rather stand outside here, freezing to death rather than do P.E,” I said. Malefor chuckled. He didn’t seem to agree with me, but he didn’t shout at me like any of the other boys would. Malefor was different. He was a nice, civilized dragon “Personally, I would rather do P.E. It’s one of my favourite subjects. If the siren went off in something like English or Geography, I’d be happy. What’s your favourite subject?” He responded. Before I could answer, a boy In front of Malefor butted in. “What are you doing talking to a queer like him?” He laughed. I didn’t say anything. So did Malefor. After that Malefor was silent. I felt so embarrassed. Mrs. Waters had finally come now, with the register in her hand. Nobody was absent today, so she ticked us all in. After that we were all allowed to go back to our classroom, E8. E8 is at the very back of the school, and it takes a while to get to it from the field, especially since the field is right at the front of the school, and our school is absolutely massive. Apparently it’s the biggest school in the Dragon Realms. I’m extra slow as well, so it takes me even longer to get there. All the other boys, including Malefor just run as fast as they can to get there. I’m always last to get to our classroom. By the time I got there, everybody had got there bags and were about to leave the classroom. Everybody stared, and the teacher called my name. “Ignitus, I’d like to speak to you after school,” She said. I nodded. Dad would not be pleased if I was late home, but I was in already in big trouble. “Now get your bag and go to your next lesson,” So I did what she said, I grabbed my bag and went to our next lesson. I was late, again. Everybody was staring, again. It was French, and our teacher wasn’t the nicest of all teachers. She was harsh, and as skinny as a stick. I knew I was going to get a huge tell-off. Miss Evans looked as if she was about to explode. “Ignitus, see me after class!” She snarled in her French accent. Some of the girls giggled. “And you three girls can see me after class to!” She yelled. That shut them up. I made my way to my desk, and stared blankly at the board as Miss Evans blathered on in gibberish. It seemed every second was an hour. I nearly fell asleep, but Miss Evans soon woke me up. “Ignitus, étés-vous la? ‘’ Asked Miss Evans. I didn’t understand what she was saying because I never listened to what she was saying in French. I just nodded. ‘’Ignitus, étés-vous la ? ‘’ She repeated, this time much louder. “Yeah…” I squeaked. “Then pay attention, enfant!” She snapped. The class laughed. Even Miss Evans laughed, but she then shushed them all. I felt so embarrassed. I just wanted to disappear. Miss Evans continued blathering on, until the bell rang for break. She dismissed everyone expect me and the three girls. “Now, get out your exercise books,” We followed her order and brought them out onto our desks. She then wrote Je ne vais pas rire en classe, on the board. ‘’Girls, I want you to copy two pages of what’s on the boards, ‘’ “And as for you, Ignitus, I want you to copy this down,” She wrote on the board again, this time writing Je ne vais pas être en Finn. I’m a slow writer. I’m slow at everything. I wrote as fast as I could, but I was still slow. The three girls had finished now. I had only a few more sentences to go. The bell rang for next lesson. Miss Evans wasn’t kind enough to let me go now. She told me I had to finish. I did, eventually, but unfortunately I was late for my next lesson, again, geography. Lucky Miss Hampson, our geography teacher isn’t as nasty as Miss Evans. She just told be to be on-time next time, and then carried on her lesson. Just like any other school day, today went by at a snails pace, with the boring, drawn out lessons. The school bell chimed for home time. Finally! I wasn’t glad when the school bell rang for home time like all the other kids, I was dreading it. Dad would shout so loud the roof would fly off. And Blaze would pester me non-stop. Usually I’d rather be at home than school, but today I’d much rather be at school than home. Our form tutor, Mrs Waters did the register, and then dismissed us from class. I took my time walking out, since there was nothing to rush about. But as soon as I was about to exit the class room, the teacher called me. “Ignitus, where are you going?” I’m such I dope. I forgot the teacher wanted to see me after class. I dragged myself towards her. Everyone had left the classroom expect me now. “Now Ignitus, I just want to have a quick chat with you. I heard you’ve been a bit unpunctual lately, which isn’t like you. I was wondering if there was something going on. Is they?” I knew she was only trying to help, but I felt too shy to answer. There was nothing for me to be afraid of. Mrs Waters was just a plump, sweet old dragoness. I just didn’t like talking, but I needed to say something. “Oh, it must be just coincidence. I’ll make sure I’m on-time tomorrow,” I squeaked in my mouse-voice. Mrs Waters nodded, not really believing me, and let me go. It took me a while to get home. I took my time and was extra slow, but I eventually got there. I pushed our pure white door open, and then shut it. I peeked at the living room to see who was there, but no one was in there. I looked in the kitchen to see if Mum was cooking. That’s strange. Mum usually cooks at this time. I made my way to Mum and Dad’s bedroom, and I saw Mum lying in bed. “What’s wrong Mum?” I asked, concerned. “Oh, it’s nothing. It’s just a little cold. Nothing too serious,” She said, then blowing her nose in her handkerchief. “Could you do Mum a favour and go to the shop and buy me some bread? We’ve run out. I’d go myself, but I’m ill,” She groaned. You could tell at first glance Mum wasn’t feeling very well. “My purse is downstairs on the coffee table – you’ll need two pounds,” She added. I found her purse and took two pounds out of it, but I decided to sneak another pound to treat myself. I’m sure Mum wouldn’t notice. It wasn’t a long journey to the corner shop. I opened the door covered in ‘No dogs’ signs, and headed towards the bread in the store. I saw they were on a two for two pound offer, so I got two of them. Then I headed to the counter, where they were lots of chocolate bars on display, and choose Twirl. Twirls have always been my favourite. Too bad Dad hates us eating chocolate bars. This was going to be only the third Twirl I’ve had in my live. Dad forbids us to eat chocolate. I gave the guy at the counter three pounds, and as soon as I left the shop I bumped into a purple dragon. Malefor. “Sorry!” I cried. Malefor moved away. “It’s alright,” “Hey, what’d you come here for?” “Oh I had to buy my Mum some bread, and I nicked another pound from her purse to buy a chocolate bar,” I said, trying to sound cool. It seemed to work, but Malefor wasn’t really that bothered. “Cool. Was it a Twirl?” It was as if he was sidekick. I said yes, feeling amazed. “I love Twirls!” He chirped. “Me too!” I chirped back to him. “But do you know what I love more?” I shrugged. “You!” |
