I'm...going to assume that he was just having a bit of fun giving a backstory to an otherwise unexplained and completely irrelevant cameo.

The reason Crash makes so many cameos in Spyro games (and vice versa) is because Insomniac and Naughty Dog used to work closely with each other. There were many exchanges of technology, ideas, and even employees between the two companies in their earlier years. Dunno if that still goes on today, but it did way back when and, as a result, the two series have been somewhat linked (if I remember right, Krome even developed some of the new Crash games while they were making LoS).

I know that (in fact, I daresay that I'm fonder of the Crash franchise than the Spyro franchise), but it's still unexplained and irrelevant in the context of the narrative.

I think he was just having a bit of fun. To me, it's just a random, amusing cameo. Like Captain Olimar's ship appearing in Super Mario Galaxy.

Well, I hope everyone knows here that Crash was stuck in the mini Ice lake in the White Isle. Dark probably made a story up for that.
