We once had avatars? [CLOSED]

I was extremely bored and decided to look through 2005's News Archive to find out which members we around when. After looking through a lot of them, I stumbled upon this:

The first part may only reveal the comments system (which is still around today); it'll eventually talk about an Avatar system. I know I was around when it was passed, because I have a comment added around the day the system was passed. I looked through my profile and tried to find an avatar option, but couldn't find it. Obviously, it was removed. But why?

I'm not asking to bring them back, just wondering why they were removed. I'm sure it was explained further in the news archive, but there're too many of them to look at. Actually, I want dark52 and respond and give feedback on what happened to it.

Well nobody used it when I implemented it (probably my own fault there though) and I just never bothered writing it back in when I rewrote a lot of the forum code. I'll probably bring it back with the next rewrite which is still in development.
