Prologue,

the year was 1202, it has been 2 years since the 4th Crusade was launched. however the Pope launched a 5th Crusade across all of Europe. knights from all countries in Europe were called to kill off the greatest enemies of mankind, these enemies were the greatest danger to a human soul, they were demons... or so the Pope and his knights thought... these demons were really just dragons. intelligent creatures that were just trying to live their lives. but neither the Pope or his Crusaders cared, the knights slaughtered any dragon they came across, whether it be young or old, sick or healthy, hatchling or egg. the Crusaders didn't care. the dragons hid at first but after a year of their race being executed enough was enough. dragons started to gather together in small armies and attack the knight's camps or small villages where there were knights. but that only made the knights more determined to rid the world of dragons. over the next 2 years the dragons kept disappearing, rumor has it that the dragons went back into hiding because of their diminishing numbers. but who knows how long the dragons are going to survive?

Chapter 1,

in a very rural land outside of Rome there was a monastery, it was at least 1 mile away from any village, it was surrounded by forests and nature. small areas around the monastery was used for growing crops. 1 of the Lay Brothers that regularly tended the crops was Benedict, but most monks called him Ben. Ben was a hard worker and was very passionate about his faith. and even though he believed that demons existed he didn't think the dragons were evil so he was troubled by what has been happening over the past 3 years. throughout his scheduled prayer times he had prayed for the dragons to be left in peace. he had wondered if Pope Innocent the III's choice to slaughter all dragons across Europe was really what Christ wanted. Ben knew in his heart that most dragons weren't evil. he had kept his feelings about dragons away from the other monks because the rest of the monks all stated that they wanted all the dragons to die off. the monk's hatred towards dragons made Ben upset but he tried not to show his sadness to the other monks. Ben sometimes stayed in the chapel late at night weeping while he prayed for the dragons. after a long days work Ben went upstairs to his room. when he opened the door he was shocked at who he found sitting on his bed. it was his older brother Ron. Ben loved his brother but he didn't like Ron's choice of religion, Ron was a satanist. Ron was wearing a black robe with a big red pentagram necklace around his neck. while Ben was wearing a brown robe, a big gold colored cross necklace around his neck, a rope around his waist with a Rosary on the rope. Ben looked at Ron with a slight smile on his face.

Ben: "Ronald, you're here. not that i'm not happy to see you or anything but why are you here?"

Ron got up "come on can't i leave home for a while and travel for 1 just to see my brother?" there was a moment of silence "ok fine the reason i'm here is because mother and father said i was a freeloader also something about me not working... so they had me pack my bags and move out of the house. so i came here."

Ben: "so why didn't you just get a job?"

Ron: "like i haven't tried... no one would hire me because if they do they said i'd bring a curse upon their business because i worship demons."

Ben: "how did you get the Abbot to even let you in the monastery?"

Ron: "oh i just said that i'm your brother and that i'm willing to work here with you. and what do you do for work all day long? pray for hours and give to the poor?"

Ben: "no, there is praying involved but my job is to help tend the fields."

Ron: "great, so can you give me a job?"

Ben: "well you can help clean the monastery, it gets very dirty in here sometimes."

suddenly a bell was heard.

Ben: "it's time for dinner."

Ron: "great, what are we having?"

Ben: "cooked meat, bread and some vegetables."

Ben walked out of his room, Ron followed. Ben stopped and looked at Ron.

Ben: "uh maybe you should loose the pentagram."

Ron: "no. why?"

Ben: "forget it, i'm sure the Abbot told the monks you were here."

Ben walked downstairs, Ron followed. they went into this large dinning room, there was 1 long wooden table with plates of food. there were about 50 monks sitting at the table. Ben and Ron sat down at the table. the Abbot sat at the end of the table. the Abbot's name was John. he stood up.

John: "brothers, today is a day of celebration. i've gotten word that the Crusader's have infiltrated a cave that contained dragon eggs and the parents of the eggs. almost all the dragons and eggs were destroyed. a few of those demons got away but the Crusader's are still in pursuit. let us pray for the destruction of those horrible beasts of the sky." he sat down and started to pray silently.

all the monks prayed as well. even Ben prayed. Ron elbowed Ben in the shoulder. Ben looked at him "what?"

Ron: "you're really praying for the dragons to die?"

Ben: "no..."

Ron got up and walked out of the room, he came back a few seconds later he came back and picked up his plate of food and he walked out of the room again. he went upstairs and into Ben's room. he closed the door and sat on the bed then he started eating. he looked out the window as he ate. he saw that the sun was setting. he then saw something blocking the sun, it was flying like a bird. at first Ron thought it was a bird, but when it got closer he could see that it was a dragon. Ron put his plate down on the bed and stuck his head out the window. he then saw the dragon plummet to the ground and into the nearby woods. without thinking much Ron ran out of the monastery and into the nearby woods in the direction he saw the dragon fall.

Chapter 2,

Ron ran deeper into the woods, after about 3 minutes of running he stopped and he saw what he was looking for, a large female dragon lay in front of him, the dragoness had arrows all over her body. she was covered in blood and she was still bleeding. a tear came to Ron's eye when he realized the dragoness had died. he then saw something under the dragonessess paw. he walked over to her and lifted her paw up.

Ron: "it's an egg."

he gently laid the dragonessess paw down on the forest floor and looked at the black egg in front of him.

Ron: "i can't leave this egg here."

he ran off back towards the monastery. he then stopped when he saw the barn. he walked into the barn. there was many sacks in the barn, Ron grabbed a large empty sack and ran out of the barn and back into the woods. he stopped when he saw the dragoness and the egg. he walked over to the egg and picked it up. he put it in the sack. he looked at the dragoness and whispered something. he then walked off back in the direction of the monastery. he walked inside and went upstairs into Ben's room. Ben wasn't there. Ron closed the door, he wanted to lock it but he didn't have a key. he blocked the door with a chair. he then sat down in another chair near the window. he took the egg out of the sack. and held it in his arms. he then felt the egg move, he heard a crack, the egg moved even more and it cracked open, it then broke in half. a little black dragon laid in Ron's arms. the dragon was covered in egg yoke. Ron discarded the egg shells in a corner of the room. he looked at the little dragon hatchling laying in his arms. the dragon looked up at him with his big yellow eyes.

Ron: "let's see what we can do about getting that egg yoke off of you."

Chapter 3,

a few minutes later Ben came upstairs, he walked over to his bedroom door and tried to open it but he couldn't. he knocked on the door.

Ben: "Ron?... are you in there?"

Ron got up from the chair holding the dragon hatchling with 1 arm. he moved the chair out of the way of the door, he opened the door, he grabbed Ben by the arm and quickly pulled him inside the room, he closed the door and blocked it with the chair again. he slowly turned around and looked at Ben. Ben was standing there starring at the black dragon in Ron's arms.

Ben: "where did you get-...?"

Ron: "ok long story short i watched his mother die and i found his egg underneath his dead mother's paw... so i took the egg and it hatched.... oh and i hope you don't mind i used a robe of yours to clean yoke off the hatchling."

Ben: "you used one of my robes to clean the dragon!?"

Ron: "yes... it's right over there on the floor." he pointed to a spot on the floor.

Ben looked over and saw a white robe on the floor it was covered in egg yoke. Ben slowly picked it up, he looked at Ron "this was the robe i wear every Sunday for Mass! why didn't you clean it with one of your robes!?"

Ron: "because i didn't want to ruin them... and you can wash it out."

Ben dropped the robe to the floor "alright what do we do about the dragon?"

Ron: "i don't know but we got to hide him somewhere..."

Ben: "i think i know the perfect place... there is an old abandoned chapel in the middle of the wilderness... nobody goes over to it anymore."

Ron: "that'll be alright... but we have to sneak out of the monastery so none of those dragon hating monks see Drake."

Ben: "wait, you named the dragon Drake?"

Ron: "yes... i found him so i should name him."

Ben: "alright... so how are we going to go about sneaking Drake out of the monastery?"

Ron: "do you have a basket and some rope?"

Ben: "yes."

Ron: "tie the rope to the handle of the basket."

Ben: "alright." he found a basket and some rope and tied the rope to the handle of the basket. "now what?"

Ron: "hold Drake."

Ben put the basket down. Ron gave Drake to Ben. Ron walks over to the door, pulls the chair out of the way, opens the door, walks out of the room and closed the door. moments later Ben hears Ron's voice.

Ron: "look out the window!"

Ben looks out his window and sees Ron.

Ron: "now put Drake in the basket, cover the basket with a small blanket and lower the basket down to me!"

Ben laid Drake down in the basket, Drake curled up into a ball and fell asleep.

Ben: "that's so cute..." he smiled lightly. he then searched for a small blanket. he found a rag that was big enough to cover the basket. he put the rag over the basket. he picked up the basket and put it on the window sill. "Ron i'm lowering the basket." he began to slowly lower the basket with the rope.

Ron grabbed the basket when it reached him. he untied the rope. Ben puled the rope back up.

Ron: "can you also bring a basket of food with a little bit of raw meat in it?"

Ben: "yes... i'll be down in a minute."

Ron pulled the rag off the basket a little and saw that Drake was sleeping. Ron smiled when he saw this, he covered the basket back up. a minute later Ben came up to Ron holding a basket filled with food.

Ben: "this should be enough to last you one day."

Ron: "you carry the food. now where is this chapel?"

Ben: "follow me..." he went off into the forest. Ron followed him.

Chapter 4,

Ben and Ron walked through the woods for a half hour before they saw a chapel in the distance.

Ben: "there it is."

they walked towards the chapel and went inside. there were large stain glass windows, wooden pews, a large crucifix hanging from the wall at the back of the chapel, on the back of the pews were wooden pockets and inside these pockets were Bibles. Ron looked around.

Ron: "so i have to stay in this chapel?"

Ben: "yes... at least until Drake is old enough to stay here on his own."

Ron: "when do you think that will be?"

Ben: "i'd say when he's five or six."

Ron: "you mean i have to live in this chapel for six years!?"

Ben: "well yes... it won't kill you."

Ron: "it will kill me on the inside."

Ben: "you're just overreacting."

Ron: "why can't you stay here?"

Ben: "because i have work... but i'll come here everyday to give you food, and i can stay here on Sundays after Mass."

Ron: "alright fine i'll stay... but what am i supposed to do until you come back?"

Ben: "you could read a Bible... ask for forgiveness for all your sins... give your life over to Christ... and do something productive with your life..."

Ron: "i'll never be that bored while i'm living here... but nice try."

Ben: "i thought so."

Ron: "can i redecorate some of this chapel?"

Ben: "you're not turning this chapel into the devil's church."

Ron: "fine, i know you'll complain if i do. i can't stand to hear him complain."

Ben: "oh and don't break anything..."

Ron: "when have i ever broken something in a chapel?"

Ben: "remember when you were fifteen and you were alone in a chapel?"

Ron: "oh... you mean that time i broke that cracker that was on a golden plate on the altar?"

Ben: "... yes..."

Ron: "yes i remember that... i've never seen our parents so angry at me before. but it was worth it."

Ben looked at him shocked, he walked over to the altar, there was a gold colored metal box sitting on a table, he opened the box and took something out of it and put it into his pocket. he walked back to Ron.

Ron: "what did you put in your pocket?"

Ben: "the Eucharist."

Ron: "the what?"

Ben: "the cracker with the little cross shaped carving on it that you broke when you were fifteen."

Ron: "oh... well why didn't you say that before? i don't know all the terms you Catholics use."

Ben: "i'm going back to the monastery." he put the basket of food down on a pew and walked out of the chapel.

Ron sat down on the same pew that the basket of food was on. he put the other basket on the pew as well. Drake poked his head out from under the rag that was covering the basket. Ron looked at him.

Ron: "hey you're awake." he pulled the rag off the basket.

Drake stepped out of the basket and curled up at Ron's side. Ron petted him. Drake looked up at Ron and smiled a little. Ron put his hand inside the basket of food and pulled out a bit of raw meat. he put the meat on the pew in front of Drake. Drake sniffed the meat and began to eat it. Ron smiled at him.

Ron: "well Drake it looks like we're stuck here for six years..." he sighed lightly and looked ahead. he petted Drake on the head.

Drake just laid there on the pew and finished off the meat. he pressed his body against Ron's side as a sign of affection. Ron smiled and petted him. a slight purring sound came from Drake as he was being petted.

Chapter 5,

3 years later...

Ben and Ron took turns being with Drake at the chapel. Ben's turn being every Sunday when he didn't have work. since Ron spent more time with Drake they had a better relationship. Drake was now old enough to walk and talk, but he still had a lot to learn. it was Sunday morning and Ben went into the chapel, his jaw dropped when he saw Ron and Drake in front of a wooden statue of satan. Ron was on his knees in front of it and Drake was sitting beside him with his head bowed and his eyes closed.

Ben: "RON!"

Ron turned his head and saw Ben "oh hello Ben. what's with the yelling? you interrupted us."

Ben: "i don't care!... why is Drake praying in front of that statue? and where did you get a statue of satan anyway!?"

Ron: "i made the statue. and i've been praying in front of it for about a year now. and a few days ago Drake joined me."

Ben: "did you tell him to join you?"

Ron stood up and walked over to Ben "no, he came on his own. but i did tell him what i was doing. and he seemed to understand. and i also told him about how satan started out by being a slave to his creator and how he rebelled."

Ben: "you indoctrinated Drake!?"

Ron: "hey he wanted to know."

Ben: "we agreed that when Drake got older we would tell him about both of our religions and we let him choose!"

Drake got up and walked over to Ben, he looked up at Ben "Ben what's a religion?"

Ben: "it's belief in a god and worship of a god. Ron and i have different gods."

Drake: "Ron told me that your god was the one who kept satan as a slave."

Ben: "Ron told you wrong. his 'god' is evil. it's a bad thing to worship something that's evil. and Ron shouldn't have told you that story. in fact he shouldn't have been praying for you to see anyway, because Ron and i had an agreement."

Ron: "an agreement which you are now trying to break by telling him your side of the story that i told him."

Ben: "you broke our agreement first!"

Ron: "hey Drake wanted to know. i'm the bad guy just because i answered Drake's question?"

Ben: "no! it's your fault that Drake believes in this shi-..."

Ron: "hey, not in front of the kid."

Ben: "... sorry... you should leave now. you've got work to do at the monastery."

Ron: "don't try to undo what i already done... because you'll break our agreement, not to mention scare poor Drake to death."

Ben: "ok fine, i won't tell him about my religion."

Ron: "ok, good. and don't you dare destroy my statue." he had a serious look on his face.

Ben: "... fine... can i at least move it out of the chapel so i don't have to look at it?"

Ron: "that wouldn't be fair to me... now see you tomorrow." he walked out of the chapel.

Ben sat down on a pew. he held his head in his hands. Drake stood there looking at Ben with a worried look on his face.
