They spend 2 to 3 years as a dragonfly nyph, an evil creature that eats everything. Then hatch out in to a dragonfly, they live for 2 weeks as a dragonfly only then die. In that time they will have mated.

I figured he was actually originally a bodily appendage experimented on by Ripto, Red, and Gnorc. They gave it wings, sentience, and built a machine powered by the gems of dead dragons that let them rip a hole in the space time continuity and send their beast into the current Spyroverse.

Thats the plot of the upcoming game I heard.
