I found something weird in GtG/RR and YotD that has to do with his wings.
Go to any place where you have that running power-up or the arrows and start running and look at his wings.
Were the game programmers lazy or what?

What's wrong with them?

It's a little thing called magic. smilie We have it confirmed in YotD that a dragon's wings are full of magic (so full, in fact, that dragons are the source of all magic in their worlds).

^Yes but you think the laws of physics would eventually kick in.

It's pretty obvious that Spyro's world doesn't work by the same laws of physics as ours. You realize you're trying to apply the laws of nature to a fire breathing purple reptile, right? Because if you are, his wings are the least of the problems.

When you Super Charge in Spyro 2(and 3, I think), his wings turn into the wing model used in Spyro 1. His tail also shrinks a bit.

Normally, they are like this:

But when you Super Charge, they look like this:

Just like his wings in Spyro 1:

Huh. I don't actually see much of a difference. It just looks like, when he's charging, his wings are more upraised in the run then they are when he's running at normal speed.

Since his wings make a similar shape in the flying levels, I wonder if they used the old wing models for those, too?

Incidentally, it's worth noting that, at the time RR was made there were exactly 12 people working at Insomniac. I wouldn't call it lazy so much as necessary, especially since they no more than a year to make the entire game.
sonicbrawler182 Platinum Sparx Gems: 7098
#22 Posted: 15:57:37 05/03/2011
Nope, they literally change to the old wing model. It's really noticeable in-game.

In the flying levels of Spyro 2 and 3, his wings are the same as normal gameplay.

And I'm not calling them lazy or anything, just a little piece of trivia. This sort of thing was pretty common back in the day anyway.

Yes I realize I'm doing that, and in the end creating a mind****. =D

It's just a random that I've been having. Even in fictional stories about other fire breathing reptiles, the laws of physics apply. For example, if the wings are too small, it's not going to fly.

It really varies from story to story, but the gist of it is that a dragon is physically impossible by the known laws of physics. Even in stories like the Pern books (which are more sci-fi and therefore have dragons based on science) the author eventually had to resort to magic to explain how the dragons fly (in this case, it was telekinesis; the dragons could only fly because they thought they could).

That explains something that made no sense to me in another game(not abiut dragons, but still)!smilie

For me, I would try to use the laws of physics, even though it's fictional. Whether it would work or not is to be found out someday when I stop being lazy and actually upload a story to dA.

Yeah, I would try too. And on the flip side, I would also make dragons who clearly can't fly but somehow crazily do as well! smilie
