Yes. The purple dragon is rare in TLoS series. Not the original.

Ah, yes. Now I remember why I don't post here much anymore. *headdesk*

The purple dragon being a super-special Mary Sue epic hero is unique to the LoS games only (though it was implied in AHT and SL that being purple might make him special). In the original games, Spyro just got lucky and happened to be a smaller target than the other dragons (StD), was in the right place at the wrong time (RR/GtG), and was the only one small enough to fit down the hole to save the baby dragons (YotD).
