Thanks. Remember, there may be some pretty shocking stuff in here involving mates and what not. I'm trying to make this realistic and relate back to an old time.

Aspid reached the west side of the temple, and immediately, a damp feeling came over him, that soothed his scales and relaxed his muscles. Dragons generally like humid, moist environments, and with all the sphagnum moss surrounding the area, it was a comfortable place in which a female would lay her eggs.
It was late April, and after the mating season in winter, many females had already laid their eggs in early spring, but Aspid's mate was late for unknown reasons, so the nursery wasn't very crowded, just a few females resting here and there, as well as an older female dragon, Eunect. She was almost like a mother figure to the females, as she spent most of her time in the nursery, tending to other dragon's needs. She was rather big for her size, but her age made up for it, and she had dull green scales. Aspid heard stories of the past how Eunect's scales used to be a glistening teal color, but grew dull with age. Mabye that's why she caught Teryx's eye, Aspid used to think. Teryx was known for being fond of green scales. Aspid liked her, but he always felt a strange uncomfortable feeling around her, considering she was one of Teryx's previous mates.
After rounding some corners, Aspid nodded his head in approval to Eunect, who was gnawing on the last morsels of a rabbit's hind leg, her teeth digging into its bones to lick out the nutritious cartilage inside. Aspid watched for a split second on how her curved, sharp fangs dug into the rabbit remains, impaling anything in its way and stabbing the savory meat.
After padding to the back of the nursery, where most dragons lay there eggs, he found his beautiful mate sleeping on the floor. The beautiful Naja. The cool sunset light shone down from a hole in the top of the temple, illuminating her luscious black scales. During this time, black dragons were considered to be cursed with evil sprirts, so many dragons who were foolish enough to believe it stayed away from her, but Aspid knew. He knew it wasn't true. When she had pushed her way through the fighting males during winter, only to pad up to him, her four-pointed horns matching his in height, he knew that she was his.
Aspid slowly prowled up to Naja. There was a flash of yellow, and one bright eye opened, disturbed by the scraping of Aspid's moving claws. She lifted her head, a hard feat because of her swollen belly, and looked at Aspid. "Captain," she murmured. He snorted with a tone of laughter. "From my mate, I prefer Aspid." He walked up to her, bending his long head down and licked her with his long tongue. She closed her eye again and smiled.
It was rare for dragons to have such bonds as Naja and Aspid had. During winter, males fought constantly for females, mated with them, and rarely remained in a long term bond. Aspid had been like this with his other mates, but for Naja, he felt a strange connection to her, as she did to him.
"How are you?" Aspid asked her gently. She swung her jet-black neck to her belly. "They're coming. Soon. Any minute now."
'How many?" Aspid would never tell Naja, but he was dying to have all their offspring be males, to continue his powerful bloodline and become Captain of the Deltas like he was.
"Three or four, I think," Naja said sleepily. Aspid nodded. "Teryx has summounded the council again," he hissed, his pink gums and white teeth showing. "I must attend."
"You won't be here when they come," Naja replied. "I understand." Aspid could tell she had wanted him here, but she knew he couldn't let his position in the temple down.
"I will come back as soon as it is over," he promised. "Don't worry. I will bear you fine little Deltas." She smiled at him, then lay her head back down. "Good luck." With that he padded out of her confined space and passed Eunect. "Eunect?"
The green dragon lifted her head. "Watch Naja for me," he said. "She is near her time and I want someone on watch." The green dragon dipped her head. "Of course. Anything for the Captain's mate." Aspid nodded. "Thank you."
Continueing in a slight trot, he made his way to the east side of the temple, the sunset gone and the clouds covering the moon. Aspid opened his mouth, drawing in the night air. Rain. Rain will be on the way.
