Call me crazy, but my favorite is ANB.
After that would be YotD and RR/GtG. And then Spyro 1. I don't care for AHT, EtD sucked, and I've not played TEN and DotD.

Oh, I see what you're saying now >.<
All Spyro games are too easy - they're generally aimed for casual gamers/ a younger fanbase, aka people who aren't as good at games as the average gamer or so. I can still beat the game in under 4 hours - longest of all the Spyro games for me.

To me, the very best game is definitely Legend of Spyro The Eternal Night on the Gameboy Advance. Not the console one but the Gameboy Advance one.
Simply put, The Eternal Night on the GBA is a hybrid game between a stage-based platformer and a "Metroidvania". This means that although there are definite stages to play, the actual stages are open-ended with multiple possible paths and many hidden secrets. Furthermore, and this is where it gets interesting, abilities gained are not like in the console version, where it only give you extra options for fighting. New abilities are used to explore the stages, unlocking areas that you couldn't access before and allowing you to go even deeper into past stages. This add a whole new dimension to the exploration. It also helps that the platforming is excellent ; the stages are huge, maze-like, full of different paths, and each path have its own hazards and quirks with some being easier than others. It also helps that the combat is fantastic. The game ditch the simplistic fighting of the console Legend of Spyro games for a deeper, Devil May Cry-inspired gameplay system where the emphasis is on long, elaborate combos. To go with the same theme, enemies in the Gameboy Advance version of The Eternal Night are significantly smarter. The enemies, once they notice you, will sound the alarm and then pursue you, working in teams to corner and surround you, keeping the pressure by using their projectiles while keeping a safe distance, blocking your attacks, and countering your combos with combos of their own. The enemies in the Gameboy Advance version feel much more like genuine opponents. This also apply to the bosses, who are far more puzzle-like and challenging overall. The game has some of the best graphics on the Gameboy Advance (they're truly fantastic) and some truly good music too. This greatly add to the atmosphere, helping making the experience better. The game does have a few drawbacks ; the game is relatively short and the game has a few... mishaps plot-wise. Some are excusable and even better than the console version by moments (The Advisor is a more memorable character and boss than the Assassin, for example) while others... are not (the infamous Cynder point). Those drawbacks are however extremely minor and the length one is not even that big since the game has difficulty modes that truly impact gameplay significantly ; the enemies on higher settings are MUCH smarter, making for an almost completely different experience and the bosses are significantly beefed up. Most importantly, you can only fight King Gaul's final form on the hardest setting (on easier settings, the fight ends on the second-to-last form). The overall stellar gameplay, both combat and platforming-wise, the excellent graphics and music, the great challenge, and the difficulty modes that make the game worth replaying all combine to make Legend of Spyro The Eternal Night for the Gameboy Advance not only the best Spyro game but also probably one of the greatest games on the Gameboy Advance, and one of the greatest games overall. Regardless of if you like Spyro or not and regardless of your opinion on the Legend of Spyro reboot, get this game. Just do it. You'll thank me later. |

In a way, TEN GBA reminded me very much of the style of gameplay of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (which is not necessarily a bad thing) crossed with the platforming/combat difficulty of the Mega Man Zero games for the GBA. It was an enjoyable game, with its only drawback being the length (which is understandable given the GBA having less memory capacity than the DS and consoles).
But, in the context of WHEN the game came out, I have to give a nod to Spyro 2: Gateway to Glimmer. At the time, the game was very enjoyable as a 3D platformer, while adding some unique and quirky subchallenges that didn't get too repetitive. The characters introduced (such as Hunter, Elora, Ripto and the Professor) were very likable, the voices were well cast, the music was pretty catchy, the game was colorful, and it was an enjoyable experience all around.
