I'm apparently the only one who ever noticed this, but the only time Cynder was ever black was in the cutscenes of ANB. Her game models and concept art were always gray.

You totally missed what I said. In her original concept art, she is gray. The only time she is ever described as being black is by Ignitus in ANB, and that should be taken with a grain of salt since he likely never saw her up close and, when seen from a distance in the game, she did look black. But, regardless, she was designed originally as a gray dragon and that remains her most common and consistent color throughout the series. Even her egg was gray.

I agree mostly with you Razz, I've always seen her as gray rather than black(or even purple, as some fans insist - oi)

She WAS black, however, in the "shiny" cutscenes of ANB - like after the Concurrent Skies fight. However, during the fight itself, she's quite plainly gray, oddly enough. After that she was never black ever again in the sequels.

I can't say I'd totally agree with the part about Ignitus not having seen her up close even once, though; he fought her during the war, saw her kidnapping all the other guardians... he might have fought directly with her at some point or another. I say it could go either way.

Overall, I'd just say this is another one of LoS's inconsistencies that can't really be fixed It's like with the sudden appearance of Cynder's jewelry in DotD.

I still don't think Ignitus ever got very close to her, because she captured every Guardian who did get too close. And he only commented on her being black in the context of fighting, which does color one's memories.

But, yeah. She's most often depicted as being gray, ergo, I think she's gray.

Perhaps her being gray was because Krome wanted her to show up in dark enviorments.

Maybe. Black is, ultimately, a color you don't want to use much of. Cynder is gray in her concept art and her game models, which makes her easier to see.
