I just noticed something about the Dark Gems from both A Hero's Tail and DotD.
In Hero's Tail, the Dark Gems are used to fuel Red's power, and also turn the lushful life on the environments around them into dark places. They emit a haunting sound when you're standing near them.
In DotD, the dark gems are crystals, and are used to animate the Golems of the Deep under Malefor's will, and used as a power source for the machinery of Malefor's army(as seen in Dragon City when you have to destory the Seige Towers on the Ramparts). They emit a haunting, whispering noise and also suck out the mana Spyro and Cynder need for their breath attacks when they are close.
Both dark gems from the two games emit a dark, haunting sound when you're near them, but A Hero's Tail's dark gems don't suck out your mana. They're both similiar, since they both radiate with dark magic.

That was probably part of the revamp, so they brought the dark gems back or used them for inspiration.

Uh, mana didn't exist in AHT. Spyro had infinite breath abilities. So that contrast between the two types of dark gems holds no merit, I'm afraid. o_q
