Since some people suspect they were hacked, how about a visible IP indicator like this?
(Note: IP is fictionalized, not my real IP.)
Runescape uses the same system (visible when you log on) and it may help to see if someone else is logging in your account.
Then in your profile is something like this:
(IP again, is fictionalized.)
I think this would clear any confusion that may arise when someone suspects they were hacked.

Yeah, you're right. If that's doable, it's a great idea.
And I could see if my phone had an IP xD

The point of this is not that we find who's a hacker, but the point is that you'll know that your password may be compromised and change it before it's too late. Note: This image is dynamically generated based on your IP, it does not reveal your ip to anyone else, not even me! |

Maybe. But what about the fact that some I.P. will change over time or if they don't change, what people will do with this advantage?

My IP changes over time, and this is where the "Your IP right now is" part for. This tells your IP right now so you'll know it changed. |

Well DUH it's going to be private! You can trace a person down to their street address just by using an IP.

The IP address space is pretty crowded right now so I'm not going to be surprised if I make up an IP and it matches someone's. EDIT: Here's the Bush Sign. |

Seems a bit overkill really. It's not that big of an issue and would just confuse a large portion of people on this site.
If you want security just use a decent password.

But let me emphasize on a point here. Even though we can find the last IP we were logged into, What is the point in knowing? Even if so, do you really think it's possible to track the person who 'hacked' your account? I mean, to me, if I found out my dS account was logged in from Zimbabwe, what on earth can I do? Track the guy down and hit him with a shovel?

That Bush sign said I was using Firefox and Mac... but it got the IP Address wrong. Then again, I have two CPUs and two different wireless routers. Theoretically, that should mean I have four unique IP addresses, no? <.< >.>

No... You should have 1... The two routers are still connected to the same phone line... And having 2 CPU's shouldn't make a difference... I.P. adresses can occasionaly change, maybe thats why... |

I think it's too revealing. It's no different than having your address exposed, except this is your digital address. Pretty overboard, as dark52 said...

But it's potentially visible to others if you take a screenshot of the forums. People do that here and there for various reasons, and they may reveal their IPs inadvertantly.

Even though someone knowing someone else's IP may be dangerous, what can the person do with it? Or what can the member themselves do? Track down and hunt the person down?
