The answer to your question is simple. It's a matter of Age. In DoTD, Spyro is only 15 and I'm not sure Cynder's age. But we know that malefore is at least a millenia old because of the picture in the warfang ruins. With age comes experience be it good or evil. Spyro simply hasn't learned to do that yet.

Yeah, it could even be possible that what Malefor did was some dark ancient powers that no one knows about anymore

I think he can't because Malefor summoned them with dark magic. I mean like the destroyer was weakened by the removal of the dark crystals. They need a power source.

Yeah I would say it's a matter of age as well. But also it could be the fact that Spyro isn't evil. Maybe that can only be used with dark magic.

it's like in Eragon, he and Galbatorix are both dragon riders, but Gal is evil and ancient and so he knows more spells and does more evil things.

I agree with the age and the one it was that it had to be a dragon with dark magic.
