there was once a sphere that lived in the night sky. mortals called it Moon. it was large and mighty and was the source of light for lost souls, travelling saints, wandering spirits, you name it and Moon lit their paths. there were, and still are, smaller spheres; millions, in fact, dotted all over the endless night skies lighting earthly and celestial paths for saints and mortals alike. but Moon took all the credit for lighting those paths and mortals only worshipped Moon. the smaller spheres had had enough and one day, while the sun was shining too brightly for anyone to see or do anything about what transpired, they descended upon Moon like those swarms of flies in the sims 2. they suffocated mighty Moon, who was not so glamorous in the final moments but still, she beamed. the smaller, scorned spheres squeezed all of their burning fury until Moon was broken, reduced to nothing more than an even smaller ball of light.
the smaller spheres dispersed, laughing as they returned to their places in the skies. constellations formed and gloated. they poured their light, radiating everything they believed Moon had kept from them, believing they were now the ones to be worshipped by foolish mortals.
but the skies were too dark. on earth, after the oblivious sun sank below the horizon, the paths of saints and sinners would cross. there was no Moon, no light, no hope of salvation, so the sinners took everything they could hold before the sun rose again to cast light on their evil acts. thousands of miles above the earth, reduced to nothing more than a fleck of sparkly dust buried in the deep blue sky, Moon looked on and wept. the weight of the tears brought her down, down, down, past the hysterical constellations, past the wandering spirits who had no idea why the moon was heading towards earth but thought she must be sure of her path. down, down, down, towards the blue of the oceans that mirrored the skies, the waters pelted by Moon's heavy tears. she saw darkness and sparring shadows, and she did not like it. she moaned up at the sky, but those she called stars could not hear the realities of their mistake.
Moon hit solid ground. it was nothing she had ever experienced before. ground was soft and cold, like a welcoming winter bed. there she lay, broken and jagged, under the gloating twinkle of her tormenters, wondering if this was how a mortal light dies, wondering if anyone would ever remember the light she used to shine and if sinners would remember redemption. she lay until the skies turned black in the deepest hour of night.
eventually, the sun rose, and looked down at Moon on earth not quite believing what he was seeing. the sun guided his rays to the fallen moon, lighting the path for a lonely earth child who did finally stumble upon Moon. the child held Moon in cupped hands, eyes wide and alight. the child traced a finger around Moon's sharp, jagged edges, muttering in awe.
'Wow. A jagged star.'
and Moon was happy.

ABSOLUTELY
he was born into our family in September 2006. his dad was our cat who had kittens with the deaf white cat up the road. his deadbeat father ran away a few months later from the start he chose me. my mum&stepdad let me name him and i named him Baby lmao iN MY DEFENCE i was 6 and we thought he was a girl until they took him to the vet to get neutered :') he was truly my shadow. he would follow me to the bus stop when i went to school and when i came home he'd be sitting outside the house waiting for me, or he'd pounce from the bushes to join me on the walk home. we often went on walks together cause he always wanted to be by my side. he'd always sleep in my room, on my bed, and when i came in he'd roll over and trill (but you could never touch his stomach even though it was SO FLUFFY). there were times i'd be away for a long time-i was in foster care for about a year when i was 14 and my grandma would Skype me with my cat so i could talk to him :') and when i came home it was like i'd never left. i'd say he hated my singing because he'd meow really loudly and try to leave the room lmfao. the little weirdo seemed to love going to the vet, he'd explore all round the room and stayed still long enough for them to weigh him (approx 5 seconds), and he loved strangers so that helped. he had the loudest purr, everyone commented on it, and he would talk back to whoever spoke to him. he'd chase his own tail and climb trees, giving me heart attacks but he never got stuck in a tree. he loved playing with scrunched up paper balls and he would pretty much only drink out of the bathroom cup, i'd be filling it multiple times a day for him. he went missing once for a week and came back fatter than ever, my grandma reckons he was stuck in someone's garage and lived off of mice and rainwater he did used to bring us "presents" (mice) but stopped as he got older and i caught him playing with a mouse without killing it #veganking
he developed hyperthyroidism aged 15 and a heart murmur aged 17. the heart murmur went down considerably but he was on meds for the rest of his life for the thyroid issues. the medication worked to keep him alive and relatively healthy for a couple of years. i really hoped he would've passed in his sleep so i didn't have to make That decision, because i didn't want to be the one who said when his life should end, but he got weaker, the meds seemed to stop working and January 17th 2025 he could not get up and was crying out in pain so i knew the day had come. so my mum held him while i drove us to the vets. i still can't believe i'll never see him in this life again. as i'm typing this my eyes are burning lol (but i love talking about him so it's worth it). his little urn is so light we brought him home in his carrier that night because i hadn't decided whether i wanted to bury or cremate him and i just wanted a little more time. also i'm very spiritual (not in a 'traditional' religious way) and wanted to give his soul time to get used to things. but he was definitely ready, the vet even said he was gone in a blink. having him home for that last night really helped me get my head around it too tbh.
a few days after he passed i spent the entire day on my mum's sofa sobbing. the next day i decided to do some retail therapy and i went to browse the charity shops. i walked into the first shop and on top of the toy bin was a large, practically brand new black and white squishmallow cat. my cat was black and white. i believe in reincarnation and souls all that jazz, and i genuinely believe my cat sent me the squishmallow so he could be with me in a way, forever. and he knew i was nowhere near ready for another cat and though i am emotionally ready now, i'm not in a position life-wise (uncertainty of where i'll be living longterm etc). we really grew up together and i will never forget him.
