I was driving home in winter conditions and had just crested a small hill when I saw an oncoming vehicle on the wrong side of the road. I quickly moved to the shoulder to avoid a head-on collision, but my tires got caught in the snow, and I ended up in the ditch. I got out, went to the back to grab my shovel, and then proceeded to dig my car free. About 30 seconds later, another driver came along, lost control, and slid right into my car, which spun my vehicle 90 degrees, knocking me down and pinning my leg underneath. It took a while, but I was eventually able to get myself out.

Luckily, my CRV’s collision detection called 911 for me, so all I had to do was reach up and open the passenger-side door to speak to the operator. Despite getting hit by my own car and having my leg pinned underneath, I walked away with only cuts on my hand from when the front bumper struck and shattered my shovel, as well as a bruise on my left leg. I consider myself very lucky to be alive.

As for the aftermath, I'm still waiting to hear back about my CRV, but despite it only being six months old, it's most likely going to be written off. I'm currently driving a rental and back at work, having only missed three days.

Jeez, that's terrifying. Thank goodness you had the foresight to have a shovel handy and quick access to 911. Glad you walked away from that mostly unscathed!

Yeah, it was definitely a Final Destination kind of moment. I think the only reason I didn’t get squished is because the guy came in at an angle, and the snow was really deep on my side.

As for now, I’m feeling perfectly fine physically. Mentally, I’ve been a bit stressed since they ended up writing the vehicle off, so I’ve been dealing with insurance and everything for the past month and a half. I’ve had a rental since the accident and somehow managed to put nearly 7,000 km on it lol.

On the bright side, the payout for my old one matched what I paid for it last summer. Since I work for the company that builds them, I got a solid discount and ended up getting the same vehicle, just a year newer, for less money—so I actually came out ahead. Not all bad, I guess. Still, I’d definitely prefer to not almost die again… ideally never.
