------------funny part over kind of sort of maybe not really------------
now this did apply heavily to the userbase like... back in 2009 but it was no different than say tumblr or 4chan or pokemon.com or wherever. i do still see this on places like reddit but overall i think people have started to care less about the whole reputation stuff..
by "care about their reputation/what people think" this is what i mean
like try to build themselves up to be some ideal person worthy of...random internet strangers respect. someone who is "mature" and "responsible" and/or "cool" and "smart and knowledgeable" like why does that matter to you in real life let alone on the internet?
what got me thinking about this was the cringe thread once i and otehr users started to post "im always cringe" and things like that because to me that is the ideal way to be on the internet or in real life
i have never once logged onto a website trying to protect or build some kind of reputation i am a goofball i am fun fun fun funny and actively try to be the uncool one i dont care when people think im stupid or act like a little kid because well... i do and i have no problem with that because quite frankly why should the internets opinion of me matter
not talking about the kind of thing like accusing someone of being saaaaaay a serial killer like causing them legitimate real life possible problems by the way i mean this on the smaller scale of "eeer they dont think im mature or cool enough"
again i dont think this applies to you guys but maybe you used to be like that or knew or know someone who is still like that i was never much friends with those types and never really bothered to ask back then just kind of point and laugh to myself about it and not understand what the problem was
again i dont mean this like you are totally being mean to someone and bullying them but its ont he internet and so it shouldnt matter
no
NO
i mean why does your status of cool or knowledgeability or adultness or domination matter
i mean those people i feel like at least one of you must know the type those people who needed to be the smartest coolest most mature 15 and a half year old trapped in a 20-something year olds body type of person
so what do you think what was the point
tell me about the reputation

it really depends on your status. if you are a prominent figure with a following your reputation matters a lot. even if you are a pro gamer online on a tier 2 team for hearthstone the chances of something you say making someone angry can be the end of your gaming career.
but for most people the ae of witty remarks and holier than thou reign supreme. in real life people are being praised for being smart or witty. if you were to ask most people outside the type of people they want to meet up with they are most likely going to say someone whos witty or someone whos smart. so of course most people are gonna try to replicate that. people like the feeling of being liked. don't kid yourself and say that you're ok with being disliked. one of the best feelings in the world to most people is being acknowledged and agreed with while also being liked by others. its an ego thing that humans have so its not like that's a problem for people. its why whenever someone gets their opinions challenged they get really butthurt and either get mad at the challenging opinion get really defensive. |

thank you genuinely for your detailed response someperson!
now see that makes sense to me the first paragraph but i mean the times where theres nothing far stake you are a virtual nobody on a forum like this one back in the day or or loserville 4chan or pokemon.com what do you gain from your “cool” status second part youre going to have to learn to speak for yourself on that one speaking only for myself i in fact dont care a bit if people dont like me on the internet i mean were all human im often plagued by thoughts of being hurt that people irl like people who said they were my friend and my whole family dont like me specifically Erika can get to me but being on the internet is like me interacting with NPCs in a video game maybe i somehow twisted in that way? i take very little seriously and being like don the internet is not a priority for me could be that i was raised without the internet old school so its not a big fixture in my life? as for opinions i also think the same on that too… like i like you guys i dont mean to be offensive or rude please dont interpret this that way but i could care less if you dont agree with me or what your opinions on a specific topic are i like to share my own to see what people will say and ill keep a debate going but you guys have no affect on my irl except for “one of you” i have become very close with off site who doesnt even come here now i actually wouldnt have thought you yourself to be someone who cares at all about what people think either someperson so im surprised to hear you say that huh i was once called emotionless and a sociopath because of my inability to connect to people on the internet which was so funny to me… but should it have been funny i dont mean to be “heartless” i hope im not that bad thank you for the reply im legitimately trying to understand the psychology behind it and have posted this on another site too im trying to put together a little “paper” on it (which is kind of a joke too but) so to speak i have seen other users post similar things to this over the years and those of you who are still here who think similar i think and cannot take this stuff seriously please do share your own thoughts i am hear to attempt to be educated about the forum coolness stuff lol

nono thats not what i mean because yeah that would make sense i mean when people refuse to act “childishly” or “silly” and feel they need to be regarded as the status quo of maturity and coolness

okay!
i tried to find and old example but couldnt get into the account but there was this anime forum i was on circa 2014 i think i posted in the same mannerisms and goofiness that i do now so this guy starts talking to me hes clearly one of the resident “cool guys” and the type of person i mean and he starts picking on me and making fun of my posts im like “thats just me! lol” and hes like “well maybe if you acted more sweet/soft spoken and normal people would like you more” those are direct quotes theres a lot more but that part stuck with my memory eventually he left me alone because i was unaffected by his insults and mockery of the way i behave and he got bored but his point was there was a need to come off a certain way and you NEEDED to make people like you and he thought he was trying to “save my reputation” by teaching me this point

some of my favs so far are "demeaning others or feeling smarter/superior is a way to ignore your own flaws" which only partly answers the question i suppose they mean that its a way to feel better about yourself if you can climb on top of others? and "to pick up chicks" which is funny cause 9 outta 10 it is never going towork for you
