which i think -- surprisingly for a pokemon -- makes thematic sense in the context of S/M/US/UM. nihilego resembles lillie somewhat. or the absence of her. the ultra beast itself looks like a hat with hair. it lacks a body or face. a sense of emptiness is key to making the design unsettling.
this parallels how lusamine (lillie's mother) neglects her children in her study of the the ultra beasts. instead of her own children, her mother is more interested in this creature. her children run away from her because of this creature. this feeling of absence is reinforced when we recall that lusamine focuses on her work in part due to the disappearance of her husband.
nihilego represents the sense of loss in the lives of lusamine and her family. this is why i feel like it's a pokemon with a uniquely striking design
