I would link a source but the ones that I came across to are riddled with ads.
Basically Target got a complaint that a book was transphobic. They removed it and then others complained that it's censorship to remove such a book, even if it has a bad message. They brought it back and said they want to "Offer a broad assortment for our guests"
Now there's two sides of people blasting at Target.
Remove the book because its transphobic or leave it to prevent censorship?

Ah the conflict as old as time. Unfortunately there really isn't a clean cut answer. Not that I support putting racism, phobic **** into books and make Mein Kampf 2. As we know a lot of authors that are racist, phobic, and sexist but their works are still readable (especially if they have their ****ed up views). It's more of a whether or not you're in 2020 and understand that is not okay and will not conform to a messed up mindset or not.

Just know that any profit made from transphobes will go straight to your paycheck and benefits so jokes on them!!!

Besides that, I'm sorry that it makes you feel uncomfortable and ****ty. I'm sorry that Target has no spine and wants to make profit anywhere they can, even if it directly conflicts with their PRIDE line.

The book in question is called "Irreversible Damage: The Transgender Craze Seducing Our Daughters" by Abigail Shrier. Even just looking at the cover, which features a 50's style painting of a little girl, is enough to tell you just how old/traditional and conformitive this author's viewpoint is.

That shouldn't be allowed in any major retail tbh because yeah censorship and everyone has their own opinions, but removing the book isn't harmful. That book is harmful. Its not about rights and all that, its about selling something with blatant hate speech.

The target by me is chill, they're not allowed to play music because an employee hacked it and started playing and adult film over the speakers in the store, but they treat their employees well

Highly agree. Say what you will about author's opinions, if the entire point of the book is to promote hate speech and misinformation to encourage said hate speech, it shouldn't be sold in retail stores.

yeah, that sucks. heavy agree on the hate speech take. this is just straight up wrong.

id also say not to protest in person atm especially with covid surging in the us. if youre determined to take a stand make a fuss on social media and/or dont buy from there. get people you know who agree w you to not spend money on black friday there, etc. im all for shining a light on nasty stuff like this but just remember that there is still a plague. dont wanna see anyone sick !

i looked into the book that they were selling, and even the cover and summary repulses me. my transition was not influenced by outside peer pressure or a fashionable "craze". by educating myself about the LGBT community, i was able to discover a way to live more authentically. i'm disgusted that target would have the audacity to sell pride merch alongside such a repulsive book.

but again, not surprised. a big selling point for target is that it presents itself as a supporter of the LGBT community. but ultimately, they're going to do whatever they think will make them a quick buck.
