It's not a gimmick! I like anime, just like several other users here who don't get so much hate for it. Want me to name them all? There are many. How's it bad, exactly? Everybody dies eventually. Some earlier than others. With the inevitability of death the only thing I wish for is for death to be viewed as beautifully as it is, the end of life is as beautiful as the gift of life itself, yet it is in a much shorter timespan that we are able to view the beauty of death.
