It's now as old as the first Spyro game was when DotD came out.

Feel old yet?

It's been ten years since I got the biggest disappointment ever? (being the DS version of DotD)

Damn I do feel old...

RIP Entranges Libellues. I wished you've got a chance to make a another Spyro game.

Not to be a but being a jerk anyway, thank god DOTD was the only big name game they were handed other than the HTTYD shovelware they made out of its remains. I have nothing against the individual EL devs, but their work at the time wasn't AAA ready, that's for sure. Not too different from Check Six that got handed Spyro 4 before they actually made a big game to begin with.

But yes I do feel old. Early X360 gen was weeeird and always feels newer than it's supposed to.

DOTD really butchered the story of LoS.

EL was perfectly competent, it's that their games were rushed into year long dev cycles by the publisher when they needed more time.

Just look at the concept art for DotD, there was a bunch of scrapped stuff.

The environments in DotD do actually look great. Especially in native 4K.

It's totally cool for people to think DOTD is ugly, btw. I won't argue against it.

It's nice for people (on both ends!) to have similar opinions, though.

I never played Shadow Legacy but hearing LoS was a reboot, I gave up Spyro forever but after DotD came out, nostalgia for the PS1 Spyro games kicked in, especially since there was at least one or two new Spyro games out every year until 2009 when there was suddenly none.

Funny how you're so used to a game series having a new sequel or spin-off every year or two until the cycle breaks with larger gaps, reboots and then revivals. It's happened to Spyro and it's happening to Devil May Cry.

Anyone who thinks Valley of Avalar and Twilight Falls are ugly is blind. And I like the in-game character models.

^ I beg your pardon!

Twilight Falls was gorgeous and I wish it hadn't been so short. Valley of Avalar would have been nice but the bloom effect was way too high and it gave me a migraine.
Bifrost Diamond Sparx Gems: 9943
#17 Posted: 13:58:56 08/12/2018
Avalar is just too bright, yeah. It also aged really badly considering it's JUST a riverside forest with rocks and hills and has very little of the fantasy world the other games had. Twilight Falls was MUCH more because it felt overworldly all around.

Honestly, I'd say Valley of Avalar was better than most environments in the game (eye gouging pain notwithstanding) but it didn't impress me like Twilight Falls, the Floating Isles, and the Catacombs. Those places all had some personality and world feel to them. Valley of Avalar was just a place I honestly didn't think about after I left it, nor do I think of it when I remember the game. It's just a river in a valley with too much bloom turned on.

I would've liked to see how Sierra handled DotD rather than Activision. I know a lot of people weren't fans of the first two game's fighting mechanics, but I would've liked to see them continue this but fix up the things people didn't like.

I liked the fact that the game was originally called "The Darkest Hour", I hated "Dawn of the Dragon". The fan-made posters were also super awesome.

But we got Activision's version of LoS. It wasn't bad, but definitely my least played of the three. Oh well.

DOTD was handled by Sierra, it's just through the fusion of Vivendi Games and Activision that Activion had its logo on the American boxarts for DotD.
European versions of DOTD still had the Sierra logo.

Sierra but Étranges Libellules. The main developer of ANB and TEN was Krome.

Where'd that cover art come from? I've never seen it before, but I have a sinking suspicion it's fanmade.

It is, hence why I said it was a fan-made poster. And it's been around since the game's announcement in 2007-2008. There's a bunch of other ones too
