Can the girl wear this dress? (She is white, and that's a qipao a chinese dress)

My answer
Yes, why wouldn't she be able to? It's a good looking dress, and she just happened to find the dress beautiful.

How is this difficult? Saying its difficult implies there's a definitive answer despite the fact something like this is fully opinion based.

And who cares if she wears a Asian dress?

Uhhh not this debate. I had enough of it on twitter.

Personally, I think she looks beautiful in it and the whole thing about cultural appropriation is bull. As long as she wasn't wearing it to offend the culture (And she wasn't) it's fine.

That's like getting mad at White People for enjoying Pixar's Coco. What happened to embracing another culture?

Pretty much, but some people can't seem to see this. I mean if that were the case, then why does the majority of the world celebrate St. Patrick's Day, something of Irish origin? Most of the people who start these debates are complete hypocrites and it really frustrates me when there are bigger issues in the world.

I'm honestly not sure where I stand on cultural appropriation as a whole. It's very complicated and there are good arguments on both sides.

As for this particular instance, I'm not Chinese so I can't really speak on it but I would've definitely identified that as a qipao (source: dated a Chinese national for almost a year).

From what I can tell, she doesn't look like she's wearing it in a way that disrespects Chinese culture, so I'd say yes, but I'm also not Chinese nor do I know enough about the culture or the situation (besides the one picture) to be completely certain.

I see the word throw around lately (coughoverwatchcough) and I'm kinda wondering what people think?

I personally do not know. I feel like the word is the new tumblr buzzword. Because a lot of people try to speak up for a race/religion/people of said culture about how other people should remain in their culture (Almost always these people are not even part of the culture they claim to speak up for, so they pretty much just tried taking away their voice imo), while people from that culture actually adore the fact that people love their culture.

Though my guess is how people behave in the situation of celebrating another culture.

tumblr is bull**** and has borderline isolationist views
in my opinion, cultural appropriation is a joke, unless its something actually harmful like reinforcing a stereotype (i.e. native american halloween costumes)

ive seen tumblr complain that eating sushi is cultural appropriation, it’s honestly ridiculous
a girl wearing a dress (respectfully i might add) or a game company developing a diverse character isnt appropriation

@Shibaru, because I don't want to quote that whole mess.

Even though she's wearing a dress commonly worn by Chinese women, it's still not cultural appropriation even by the definition. In fact, the young woman is even following something that is not cultural appropriation by your definition:

"Wearing clothes from another culture in a respectful way"

The dress is called a cheongsam, also known as qipao. The dress was worn by Chinese women in the upper-class, because it was a fashion trend. The dress itself wasn't used for any traditional means, and it was even used in advertisement to showcase how "classy" the product was. It was their equivalent of the Hollywood movie star look.

The woman in the photo is wearing it because she's going to prom. Prom is a classy event. She is wearing a high class dress, and that's it. That's all she's doing. She's not mocking Chinese culture, she's just wearing a high class dress from a Chinese fashion trend.

That literally took two seconds to do, and I learned something new. Try again.

No, but I think you're right. I don't think this in particular was appropriation.

That being said, I do think cultural appropriation definitely exists. Maybe not as prevalent as tumblr seems to think, but I think there's some merit to the idea.

Well yeah it does exist, but it's far from a bad thing. Culture has evolved because of cultural appropriation. Unless someone specifically takes a cultural thing and tries to mock it/claim owner ship of it, then yeah, it's bad. But if they are simply doing it out of appreciation for the culture, or just liking how a certain things looks (Like a white person getting dreads or in this case, a white girl wearing a qipao), it's really not that bad.

Thank you and I'm sorry for that mess. I was already pissed off for unrelated reasons and I just couldn't stand people saying that cultural appropriation was just something made up by Tumblr.
I was wrong for going as far as I did and I also realize that it might have also come across as me saying that the woman in the picture was indeed doing that. I did not mean that at all and I apologize for that. I could have easily just calmed myself down and did as you did, which would have been a lot more effective, or just not even posted at all. Instead, I contributed to one of the things I was trying to speak up against.
