Story time.

Once upon a time our mod Trix, thought "Screech owl" was another word for owls specifically the grumpy ass old geezer ****s that will tell you "Get the **** off my lawn!" Then the next google search later, she figures out that "Screech owl" is actually a species of owl the comes from both East and West coasts, has multiple color morphs, they are tiny, and they do not actually screech. In fact "Screech" owls trill and coo instead of "screech".

Why am I telling you this story? Because I have a question to beg an answer for and that is, why are they called "Screech owls"?

Also here's a picture of a red morph screech owl adult on a hand.

Also fun fact I never knew the "Transforming Owl" was actually called "Northern White Faced Owl". Also I thought it was a (western) Screech owl for a fair portion of this research.

WHITE FACED OWLS ARE MY FAVOURITE
(Well, second to short eared owls)

But they're called screech owls because of the noise they make, haha!
Similarly to how the tokay gecko is named after it's call!

I say this as a very guilty bird lover... it is because they are so cute that we as the fan girls make this sound upon seeing them.

But they literally don't screech tho. They coo. So strange maaan.

Speaking of them eared owls, I actually didn't know they can move their "ears" and I thought it was the most amazing thing to notice.

Okay that makes sense tbh.

Dumb fact: In some translations of the bible Lilith is referred to as an "owl" though usually referred to as a "Screech owl"
