darkSpyro

Eleven years ago, in 2061, Activision announced that Skylanders: Titan Lords - the 43rd entry in the now-obscure Skylanders franchise - would be the final game, as Activision was now being brought by Disney, like everything else, and Disney wanted them to focus on making games about pink unicorns instead.

This was bad news for darkSpyro, because it meant Spyro would now be a lost IP, another in Activision's ever-expanding catalogue (as of 2061, their latest was Bubsy the Bobcat). With no new games to gather new users, or create conversation, darkSpyro was certain to become yet another website lost at the bottom of the internet.

Dark52 sighed. He remembered the Net Neutrality Wars of 2018-2020, all the fighting that he had hoped would save darkSpyro. It was all in vain. Because now, it seemed that darkSpyro was lost. He remembered a quote that Magmion712 had spoke to him once: "A kingdom that has once fallen can never again come into being".

Magmion712 had referred to the 5-year hiatus of Skylanders between 2041-2046, the longest hiatus the franchise had seen, and dark52 denied him, remaining confident that darkSpyro would become as active as it was during the original trilogy (Spyro's Adventure, Giants, Swap Force). But now it really did seem like the end... there was no sign of hope to be found anywhere.

Suddenly, dark52 had an idea! With Activision's new Epic Unicorn franchise being released soon, he could now dedicate darkSpyro to that instead - Epic Unicorn was sure to become popular! He contacted Disney right away (darkSpyro was also owned by Disney now) to see if they approved... and they didn't.

dark52: "Disney, I just had an idea! I'll dedicate my website to Epic Unicorn, that will be sure to gain a rise in popularity!
Disney: "Sorry, but user Magmion712 has already made a website dedicated to it. We urge you to reconsider your actions - the few remaining Spyro fans need a place to go."

Dark52 was devastated, and slumped back into his chair. Magmion712! That bastard had got to it before him! Now he was certain his website was doomed, there certainly were few remaining Spyro fans, and even they would be moving on. Nevermind... he was getting older, this website was nothing more than a distraction from his job at the local toy store. He wouldn't be sad to see it go.

And so, the few remaining fans - most notably UltraBoomer, evil_malefor, and shinyShedinja - discussed what would happen now. Although UltraBoomer was as optimistic as always, evil_malefor, shinyShedinja, and others weren't so sure.

UB: "guys, it's not going to end. there'll be few of us here, but we'll still come back right?"
e_m: "I'm not so sure. Disney aren't too fond of dark52 since he tried reviving Infinity Guru, they're most likely using excuses to make it seem like they actually care about darkSpyro. They'll shut it down whenever they want."
sS: "Not necessarily. I do not think they're that intent to bring us down, maybe somebody will be able to stop them."
e_m: "But who? Who'd want to stop Disney, let alone go up against them?"
UB: "i'll admit, maybe you're right malefor. but i'm still hopeful. after all, remember magmion712? he thought we would go down too, but he was wrong."

They discussed this for a while. Eventually, everyone stopped worrying, and they resorted back to the usual darkSpyro behaviour of sharing their sexual fantasies - dark52 decided to lessen the rules after Activision released their first M-rated Skylanders game, Skylanders: Death Strikers, in 2024, which had led to an entirely new era of darkSpyro users.

And so it continued. Many of the older users such as 34HammerStorm, who originally joined in 2050 to ask questions about TLoS, eventually left as predicted, stating that the website was becoming more and more inactive with less reason to come back.

In some cases, users left due to the increasing amout of NSFW, although these leavers mostly occured after the rule changes in 2021. However, now that the fate darkSpyro was in the balance, the users became much more chaotic than usual. In some cases, dark52 had to Ripto some users who had gone too far amid the chaos.

As I was saying... and so it continued. Until 2072, that is...

e_m: "I'm leaving. Sorry guys, I know I said I'd try to stay in contact, but this is just becoming too inactive. I'm 35 now. I have a job, a girlfriend, responsibilities. I can't keep coming back here. Goodbye."
UB: "Aww. Well, we'll make sure to remember you. You were a great friend to me and Shedinja for all those years, I'll never forget some of the memories we had."

Almost every user was gone. Now, only 4 users remained active on a weekly basis: UltraBoomer, Vampos, darth.yoda, and ignis4. Only 4... once every month, a fifth user - Chaosqueen - would show up, but rarely posted. Occasionally there would also be a sixth, RedBlaze909, but that was rare as he too had real world responsibilities now.

4 users, 6 at most. Not enough, thought dark52. He wasn't getting enough income to make profit and pay Disney for internet space at the same time. So what did he do? On September 7th, he made an announcement:

"On December 3rd, I will be shutting down darkSpyro due to monetary issues. Because of the lack of new Skylanders games, there isn't enough traffic here to pay for the website anymore. Thank you.

-dark52"

So that was it. The question that had the users of darkSpyro on edge had finally been answered after all these years - darkSpyro would be shut down on December 3rd, 2072. Everyone now discussed what would happen now. Where would they go now? How would they stay in contact? Or would they just give up and do what evil_malefor had done, and go back to their regular lives?

UB: "I have an account on that Kirby forum, MirrorMirror. You can talk to me on there, my account there is UltraKirby2."
Vampos: "I'm not going anywhere, all those websites are ****. **** all of you. No, I'm going to get a life for once. I've been here too long anyway."
d.y: "I don't know. I think MirrorMirror is a pretty good website, even though Kirby turned bad after Kirby Rebooted... I'll probably go there."
i4: "I... Well, you know me. I'm not that good socially. Really, Darkspyro was the only place I felt welcome, but I guess I'll just go to MirrorMirror like the rest of you... Yeah."
UB: "Yeah! We'll go to MirrorMirror. Layout is kinda similar to dS, too."
Vampos: "****ing idiots, Disney shut down MirrorMirror three years ago. FFS."
i4: "Oh... Yeah. That too. I dunno now. But... Oh, what will we do?"
d.y: "I remember something my aunt said about some guy called Arthur that would come back to help us in our time of need, if you'd believe any of that. This probably doesn't count as that though."
UB: "Wasn't it just his sword? Argh... we're thinking too deep into this."

Suffice to say, everyone panicked. Coming up with excuses, ways that darkSpyro would be saved... just as chaotic as you'd imagine. After all, darkSpyro had stayed strong for over 60 years, even outlasting Facebook and YouTube. It was hard to believe it was ending... because it was, wasn't it?

December 1st, the first day of Christmas, 2 days until darkSpyro was due to end. DancingShower11 had finished her Christmas shopping. She had become a professional actor, one of the richest on the planet, appearing in films such as Star Wars XIV and Iron Man 7. She also launched a musical career once, making a hit single that stayed in the charts for 3 weeks. She was happy, a successful person in every sense of the word.

As she hid the presents where her children - Chris and Jenna - couldn't see them, she remembered that time she was shooting a scene for a film called Beyond Reality. Quite low-budget, but eventually became a cult classic. There was a scene where the kid gets banned from some website... she couldn't remember much, it was a long time ago.

Didn't she get banned from somewhere once? Some Spyro forum, wasn't it? Ah, yes... darkSpyro. She had been banned for 50 years, but not permanently. Wouldn't this mean she would be unbanned by now? She decided to check, for old times' sake. See how much it had changed.

She booted up her computer, brand new and state-of-the-art, as were many of her belongings were. Heh, if she wasn't banned from darkSpyro, she likely wouldn't have been so eager to pursue her acting career. But after being banned, she gained a newfound confidence, like there was a life outside of the internet. And so there was.

DancingShower11 went to darkSpyro... the first time in over 50 years. She checked some old accounts - most of the people she remembered had left sometime between 2013-2020. Understandable, she wondered if they had became successful too?

Some new users she didn't recognize, very few. Only three had been online in the past week - UltraBoomer, ignis4, RedBlaze909. Clearly it was becoming less and less active, maybe something had happened with Skylanders? She wondered-

Huh? There was an announcement. Usually, most announcements that she remembered would just be kept to Site News, but this time there was a purple banner at the top of the forum list: "End of DarkSpyro Announcement ". Uh oh, thought DancingShower11, something has indeed happened.

She read the announcement. Yes... darkSpyro was ending. Soon, it seemed. She didn't feel anything. It was too long since she had last visited, she didn't feel very connected to the website. No use crying over something you barely know.

She turned off the computer and went outside. A beautiful day, the sun was shining... it reminded her of when her two kids were younger. They used to play out here, playing I Spy and just having fun like kids do. A beautiful kind of innocence, one often lost by the internet. Yes, a beautiful day indeed, and... there was a sword stuck in the ground?

It reminded her of all those stories she heard as a kid, of King Arthur and such. She was far too old to be in any of those stories. But still... it was certainly odd.

She walked over, and lifted the sword out from the ground. Suddenly, she felt as if she had been struck my a million lightning bolts at once! Her senses faded, as she was cast into a state of revelation, an enlightenment of sorts. She felt as if she was once again becoming younger, more athletic again... stronger. Like she could take on an army. Then she heard a voice:

"Oh mighty DancingShower11, destined to save all mankind from the villainous mouse, he who spreads his foul miasma like the very breath of Satan himself! The one fortold to herald the apocalypse, but it shall not be so, for the Elder Gods have decided to call upon a saviour to spare them from this fate - it is you, DancingShower11! With the almighty Blade of Burning Suns, you shall strike at the heart of evil itself, and once again mankind shall roam free forever, untainted by the foul miasma! Behold! A vision of the mouse's evil contraptions!"

With that, her vision returned. She seen all the darkSpyro users, along with many others she did not recognize, hanging in cages. Behind the cages stood a mouse - Mickey Mouse, likely the mouse the voice was referring to - taller than any she had seen before. Atop his shoulder, she seen a man - she sensed his name was Ragnarok, known to darkSpyro as Magmion712 - who was laughing evilly alongside Mickey. Meanwhile, those in the cages were crying out in despair, pleading to be freed from the unholy menace.

Then the vision faded, and the voice returned:

"This is the one, the evil who seeks to end mankind! Now tell me, DancingShower11, do you take upon the Blade of Burning Suns and pledge to defeat the mouse, or shall you leave your friends to die?"

DancingShower11 hesitated. Still enhanced with that feeling of being struck by a million lightning bolts, she hesitated. Mankind needed to be saved, she had seen the evil that Disney was becoming, and was determined to end it. But on the other hand, could she? Was she strong enough, brave enough, to take on the mouse? She made up her mind:

"I, DancingShower11, shall aid mankind in their darkest hour! I shall defeat the mouse and spread freedom across these lands once more! Hear me, all forces of evil, for you shall fall by my hand! The forces of light shall prevail for all eternity!"

The voice:

"Then behold! Your journey for the freedom of mankind now begins! Gather the heroes of light, and bring down the mouse! Light shall prevail!"

The feeling stopped, as she was now cast into another reality. She was younger now, she could feel it. Younger, stronger, and braver than ever before. She looked upon her surroundings - an open field, seemingly in the middle of nowhere. Now she must decide where to go. And most importantly, gather the heroes of light and bring down the mouse, once again unleashing freedom upon mankind.

The Epic Battle for the Freedom of Mankind begins now!
