This is a list elevators in the world that are widely known throughout the elevator community. These elevators are either known for being unique, in buildings that have been filmed by a lot of elevator enthusiasts due to the building being a popular destination, elevators that have gotten many views on YouTube by one or more elevator enthusiast(s), or always featured in various media (such as movies, TV programs, music videos, etc.), thus motivating other elevator photographers to film them.
Contents[show]
Dover
Administration Building, UTEP (El Paso, TX, United States)

In the University of Texas at El Paso's administration building, there are two Dover traction elevators installed in 1978 and modernized in 2000. These elevators were filmed by CubsRule2040 in March 2014 and are famous for having a female voice annunciator in one elevator, a male voice in the other, and still having the original fixtures while undergoing modernizations.
Four Season Racquet Club Hotel (Lake Ozark, MO, United States)

The fitness center elevator at the Four Season Racquet Club Hotel in Lake Ozark, Missouri is famous in the elevator community due to its rattling rides, tripple-chimes, worn out fixtures and best of all the abused Impulse floor indicator. As of July 2014, the elevator has been improved. It was filmed by TheElevatorChannel from 2009 to 2014.
Market Parking Garage (Roanoke, VA, United States)

These two Dover elevators were first filmed in 2008 by dieselducy and he made them famous by getting "stuck" in these elevators. On later takes, however, he did things to make it seems like the elevators were behaving in weird manners that were different every time he revisited them. One of these was where the motor would start up when the elevator was stationary and would turn off when the elevator cab starting moving upwards. On another take he used a stop-run key switch to make it seem like anytime he said "stop", the elevator would stop and when he said "go", the elevator would start moving again. Even though these elevators only had a few glitches and not many anymore, they are still constantly revisited and have become a staple to elevator photographer meetups with dieselducy in Roanoke, VA.
Palace Hotel (Myrtle Beach, SC, United States)

The three Dover elevators in the Palace Hotel in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina have been considered death-trap in the elevator community due to their noisy rides. They were first filmed by crapper1 and later by escalatorgeek881 in 2008[1].
Paramount Building (Dallas, TX, United States)

These are very likely the only unmodernized Dover Computamatic elevators that were filmed by members of the elevator community. They were filmed by dieselducy, gluse, CubsRule2040, and elevatordude3308.
Roosevelt Field Mall (Garden City, NY, United States)

One of two Dover scenic elevators at Roosevelt Field Mall is famous for its loud "Chewbacca" Dry-powered hydraulic motor; the other has a quieter motor and was nicknamed "Chewie Junior". It is another overfilmed elevator, and it was filmed by suzzex (who also visited the machine room), ih8escalators, PinePowerLI, ih8thyssenkrupp, SchindlerHaughton, LongIslandElevators, and suejoshappy. Until the elevators removed in the renovations at late 2015.[2]

This building is the tallest hotel (granted there are two brands sharing the building) in not only the continent but the Western Hemisphere and I happened to stumble upon it, so I went in to check out (and film) the elevators. (It's a Duo brand Marriott hotel that is half courtyard by Marriott and half residence inn by Marriott.) There are 2 sets of elevators (one for each Marriott brand) and I was trying to film both, first the courtyard elevators (lower rise) and then the residence inn elevators (high rise). There was a guard or employee standing in the courtyard elevators hallway so I did not feel comfortable going for that first especially with the high rise (residence inn) elevators wide open.
-Sadly wide open only meant reaching the elevators, not for taking them (mostly) anywhere as all the high floors are key-carded off.

Now for the ugly part, this is what can happen when you hitch a ride on a key-card-e-vator with the WRONG person! I got on and pressed the top floor (65) after he picked his floor. This person wanted to know if I was a guest and at first I pretended to be taking a keycard out but after a few seconds he said you're not a guest and asked why I was there. I admitted that I am an elevator filmer and after a few seconds he said no twice as if he has the power to control what I do (essentially communist), then made me get out of the elevator on his floor and call another elevator to ride down to the lobby. If that wasn't enough he felt like riding back down with me and reporting me to the front desk.
While waiting to rise down, he said I can't come into the lobby or ride the elevators as if he owns or manages the place. I then repeated why I got on the elevator.
On the ride down, he asked if I wanted to take a picture of something and I said for a 3rd time what I was doing and then he let out a POC nasty laugh as if I have no right to have an unusual hobby. He then said don't break the rules as the elevator opened in the lobby (what rules? his?).

This person is obviously a communist jerk who thinks he can control anyone who is doing something he doesn't like or respect for that matter. It's bad enough when a REAL security guard attacks us taking pictures or filming, but a freakin POS guest acting like a security guard when he isn't?!
Like many other a-heads er acts like it's a crime to have an unusual hobby and I'm sure considered me a trespasser and a liar without saying the words.
Upon being reported to the front desk (after the video ends), the woman there asks for my Id, I show it and then I tell her what I was doing. She says that she's sorry but the elevators are for guests only.

This incident came on a day when I was trying to get elevator enthusiasm expanded to make it regular that elevators in high security office buildings get filmed, by going to some buildings and speaking to the front desks. At the first one I was told I need to call someone in the marketing department and obtain permission that way. At the second though, the person said that they don't allow photography, not even the possibility of getting any contact for special permission, which means that place is paranoid to the max. After that I did not feel like hearing that from another place so I decided to film some more hotels. I successfully filmed at The Pearl and Michelangelo hotels before coming here, but this was not only upsetting, it made me feel like a criminal in a backwards society and I want little to no use to do with psychologically destroyed NYC!

This is a complete blow to the hobby, because now I won't be making stops in Manhattan [the King of Paranoia (at least in North America as I hear that England is competing for that)], unless I'm seeing my cousin or going to a special event. If/when those rare occasions do happen, I will now only film elevators at stores and hotels that don't have/have turned off key-card readers.

People like this have to be shown that this is unacceptable, if it is possible to get a good look at him in the video and you come across this anti-unusual hobbyist (as unlikely as that would be), you need to call him what he is (communist, hobby nazi, and/or unusual hobby hater), and threaten to report him to the police with harassment charges if he tries to pull the same stunt on you. THIS MUST STOP!
I grant permission to fellow enthusiasts of unusual harmless hobbies (including but not limited to elevator enthusiasm) the ability to reupload this video to help expose these hobby haters and eliminate attacks like this in the future.

Design for Elevator of a building

Scenarios

A typical lift has buttons (Elevator buttons) inside the cabin to let the user who got the lift to select his/her desired floor. Similarly, each floor has buttons (Floor buttons) to call the lift to go floors above and a floor below respectively. The buttons illuminate indicating the request is accepted. In addition, the button stops illuminating when the lift reaches the requested floor.

Use cases:

User

• Presses the floor button to call the lift

• Presses the elevator button to move to the desired floor

Floor Button & Elevator Button

• Illuminates when pressed by user

• Places an elevator request when pressed

Elevator

• Moves up/down as per instruction

• Opens/closes the door

Design

Each button press results in an elevator request which has to be served. Each of these requests is tracked at a centralized place. Elevator Requests, the class that stores, elevator requests can use different algo to schedule the elevator requests. The elevator is managed by a controller class, which we call Elevator Controller. Elevator controller class provide instructions to the elevator. Elevator controller reads the next elevator request to be processed and served.

The button is an abstract class defining common behavior like illuminate, doNotIlluminate. FloorButton, Elevator Button extends Button type and define placeRequest() method which is invoked when a button is pressed. When a floor button or elevator button is presses a requests is added to a common queue.

ElevatorController reads the next request and instruct next action to the elevator.

How can we extend this to multiple elevators?

In the single elevator scenario, there is a single elevator and an elevator controller and a common server where the floor requests and the elevator button request are stored. Which are processed as per the scheduling algorithm.

To extend this to multiple elevator scenarios there will still be single elevator controller. Floor based requests can be served by any elevator whereas elevator button requests will be served only by the elevator to whom the button belongs.

FloorButton's placeRequest() adds a request to the common queue, which is accessed by the elevator controller thereby assigning the request to one of the elevators. ElevatorButton's placeRequest adds a request to the elevator directly as it is supposed to serve it. Elevator controller will be running various algorithms like shortest seek etc. to decide which lift is supposed to handle which request.

The two types of design problems asked in interviews are:

First family of design problems are relating to design of real life websites. These problems apply scalability theory, load-balancing, redundancy etc. For example Design Facebook, Design bitly, Design Quora, Design Uber ,Design IRCTC etc.
Second family of design problems are make class diagrams. For example Design Elevator system, design valet parking, design restaurant system etc.
“Problem Solving in Data Structures & Algorithms” written in various languages like C, C++, Java, C#, Python etc. The book is written for interview preparation point of view explaining linked-list, tree, hash, heap etc. There is huge number of diagrams to explain various concepts. It also contain System-Design chapter in the end that will give a systematic approach to solving the design problems in an Interview.

Some problems that I had discussed in last chapter are:

How would you design Facebook, How would design bitly. etc.
How would you design elevator system or restaurant system etc. are also discussed.

What about the elevator that Harriette Winslow operated back when she was still an elevator operator on Perfect Strangers and the first three episodes of Family Matters?
