The Legend of The Earthseed
The elders have often spoke of the world before The Fall. A world where humanity ruled the earth, but such a thing could not last. Humanity was flawed, filled with hatred and greed. And by the seven sins of man as told in the oldest of legends they brought the world to the brink of utter destruction. Through the use of the Great Weapons humanity nearly wiped the world of all life. However, where there is life -- there is hope.
Our ancestors created a sanctuary with a great gift from Mother Earth known as ‘The Earthseed’. This blessing from the earth is said to have cleared away the unclean aura left behind by the Great Weapons. It is here in the valley, at the base of the river, where The Earthseed was planted and our home was made. It is the Earthseed that brought back the creatures that dwell in the wilds outside of the village. It is the Earthseed that made the land fertile once more.
It is us of The Sanctuary that guard and protect The Earthseed. Our lives are lead so that we may better protect it because where there is life -- there is hope. We are the hope of future generations of our tribe.
About The Sanctuary
The Sanctuary is a vibrant area full of life and potential. This area is about 25 miles in diameter and includes the valley, the river within it, and the surrounding area. The area atop the valley is mostly grassland while the area within is light forest. The wildlife includes that which would live in the previously stated environments. The members of The Tribe of The Sanctuary live primarily off the land. Though they do practice in the farming of vegetables and fruits, a lot of their food comes from the land and the wildlife around the area.
None of what is taken from the surrounding area is wasted. Animal hides and bones go into making homes and weapons. Even animal excrement gets burned as fuel for the fires. Through ceremonies and ancient traditions life is given back to the surrounding area. This are sacred practices that every member of the tribe participates in.
The buildings in the Sanctuary are typically built from animal hide and fallen lumber. There is little to no metalwork within the Sanctuary as such things would pollute the area provided by The Earthseed. Every member of the tribe is assigned a job or a place within the tribe. Only the very young and the Elders do not aid in day to day activities and even then they are not idle. The young ones learn how to live and give back to the world. The Elders govern the tribe and decide on how to better the future.
The World Outside
The world outside of the Sanctuary is far less pleasant to the world inside. The world is filled with what the tribe calls ‘Rot’. Because of this the majority of the world outside of The Sanctuary is a giant wasteland. Most people within the tribe know little of the world outside, but those who have ventured beyond have told stories of their travels.
There are many races of the wasteland. The elves, renowned for their long lives, lives in cities to the north. The dwarfs, known for their hardiness and resilience to the rot, live underground to avoid the harshness of the rot. The Automatons, the ancient machinations of the humans of old, wander in bands together to survive the harshness of the other races. And Wastelanders, humans that live outside the safety of The Sanctuary, huddled in ruined cities they once ruled.
Many of the creatures and beings that live their lives exposed to the rot have become twisted and malformed. They have poison in their blood that harms those that are exposed to them. Even items with prolonged exposure to the rot can spread rot itself. Once humans are exposed to enough of the rot it will kill them, often painfully.
Beyond this not much is known about the outside world. Those who have wandered farther have not returned to the bounty of The Sanctuary.
