At the end of Gloomy Glacier, you rescue Spyro after he was captured and put in a cage over a bottomless abyss. It's unavoidable in the game.
P.S. It's in Icy Wilderness the 3rd realm in the game.

me too gloomy glacier is also my least favorite level for extreme length of hardness.
