I got two Battlecast cards from the SuperChargers starter pack last week, but I've never booted up the Battlecast app. Given that there is a story mode to the game, I was wondering if it can all be done using only physical cards and nothing digital. Of course that would just make the game quite freemium for me, but I would like to try the game's concept as it would authentically be by only collecting card packs and no digital cards whatsoever. I thought it would be more fun like that.

So since I've never tried the app, is it possible to go through WITHOUT use of digital cards? Or is there something I'm missing?

You get free cards for finishing the tutorial and without it you can't do PVP, but for story mode it shooould work?

That would be kind of foolish. The game is designed to give you free cards daily and you get credits when you win in story mode or vs mode that you can use to buy digital packs. I've never paid for any cards and I've got like 210 out of 300 cards.
