Examples: My 600-lb. Life, The Biggest Loser, Extreme Weight Loss, My Big Fat Fabulous Life, and various documentaries and talk shows.

What are your opinions on these? Personally, I think it's encouraging and heartwarming when patients successfully lose weight and get their lives back on track, but yet it's rather macabre to showcase the suffering of families in this manner.

And not all of the shows are about weight loss; on the contrary, My Big Fat Fabulous Life is about a woman who loves being overweight and believes that a healthy lifestyle is possible for an obese patient. This opens up the whole debate on "fat acceptance" and that's usually just a can of worms that everyone wants to chuck in the lake.

I'm at a normal weight (and even when I was overweight when younger was never really that bad) but watching these shows or those people and I become really uncomfortable.

At best it's further motivation to never become that. As if I needed any more to begin with.

I think it's pretty nice how they can transform those who want to become a healthier individual. However a lot of these shows cause health problems such as overworking patients and malnutrition I'm their new diets.

She has a disease, Polyisitc Ovarian Syndrome. I understand she got it later in life, and was the cause of weight gain. But saying "I'm not going to lose it because people need to accept fat people..just..isn't helping her. She refuses to get better, to make her body more healthy. That's what I don't I don't like about her.

I prefer My 600-lb life, because at least they're trying to make themselves better, even if some of tem don't quite make it through their first couple of weeks.

I think the issue is that the message also gets lost easily. The INTENTION is maybe "just because I've got a disease and can't fix my weight doesn't mean life should turn its back on me", which is a real issue especially with overweight people getting turned down for jobs and whatnot, but the result is "being overweight is totally fine and anyone that criticizes that is problematic" especially on people that don't want to change and would rather listen to lies to stay in their little safe space.

Something that did a better job was some show about health and fitness in my country, which presented several cases of people who are overweight, but as healthy as they can get, and had to fight for their rights in some areas.

Yep, I know about PCOS. PCOS doesn't cause weight gain, it just makes it harder to lose weight. That being said, I've seen personal testimonies from PCOS patients who claim that they lose weight normally.
